Aggies Pull Away Down Stretch For Victory At Utah State

LOGAN, UT – The New Mexico State women's basketball team overcame a sluggish first 25 minutes of the game and finished strong down the stretch to pick up a 71-58 victory over Utah State Thursday evening at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.

With just over 15 minutes to play NMSU trailed by one, but the Aggies then used a 18-9 run to pull ahead and held USU to just one field goal in the final four minutes of play to seal the victory.

The Aggies victory gives them a series sweep over Utah State and NMSU now improves to 14-4 on the year and 4-1 in WAC play. USU falls to 6-12 and 2-4 in the conference this season.

Four Aggies scored in double figures with sophomore guard Hannah Spanich highlighting the game with her career-high of 15 points off of 4-of-6 shooting from the floor and a 7-of-8 performance at the free throw line.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Neal Scores 22 In Loss At Louisiana Tech

RUSTON, LA - Senior forward Sherell Neal scored 22 points and had 12 rebounds for the New Mexico State women's basketball team who fell 57-50 at Louisiana Tech Saturday evening in the Thomas Assembly Center.

NMSU's five-game winning streak comes to an end with the loss and the Aggies are now 13-4 on the year and 3-1 in WAC play. La. Tech improves to 8-9 and 2-2 in conference play this season.

La. Tech was down by as many as 10 in the first half and by five in the second, but used an 11-0 run with under 10 minutes to play to pull ahead. The Aggies went cold on the offensive end of the court in the second half, only shooting 24.1 percent.

Head coach Darin Spence was very frustrated with his team's focus leading up to this game.

"We didn't prepare well in practice and I could just feel we weren't as focused this week," Spence said. "We didn't have the same sense of urgency tonight and we weren't able to make some easy shots."  Continue Reading This Post >>

Team Effort Leads To Road Win For Women’s Hoops Squad

FORT COLLINS, CO - Senior guard Irma Kmitaite-Smith and freshman guard Madison Spence both hit four 3-pointers and senior forward Sherell Neal scored a season-high 22 points and had 11 rebounds in a 77-67 victory at Colorado State Saturday, Dec. 29, in Moby Arena.

The Aggies hit nine 3-pointers in all during the game against the Ram’s zone defense, the most since Jan. 21, 2006 when NMSU made 11 three’s against Louisiana Tech.

Neal’s double-double was the 30th of her career as she helped New Mexico State improve to 9-3 heading into conference play. Colorado State falls to 2-11 on the year.

Head coach Darin Spence was really pleased to pick up the victory on the road.

"We had a great team win today," Spence said. "We understand that people are going to give us their best shot. Irma came out and shot the ball really well. I thought Tyshae Walton did a good job on their top scorer, holding her to only five points."  Continue Reading This Post >>

Jawara Scores 20 in Loss at UTEP

EL PASO, TX - Senior forward Anikia Jawara had a season-high 20 points for the New Mexico State women’s basketball team who fell 64-57 Saturday afternoon at the Don Haskins Center.

The Aggies fall to 6-2 on the year with their sixth-straight loss to UTEP who improved to 5-2 with the victory.

Jawara’s 20 points came on 9-of-16 shooting from the field and she pulled down seven rebounds. Freshman guard Madison Spence added 13 points in the loss to go along with a career-high seven assists.

Kasia Krezel led the four Miners who scored in double figures with 18 points off of 6-of-8 shooting from the field.

The Aggies had led by as much as eight in the first half, but UTEP outscored the Aggies 19-7 in the final eight-plus minutes of the opening frame to lead 37-30 at intermission. Miner guard Jareica Hughes scored all 12 of her 14 points in the game in the opening half.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Henderson’s Late Free Throws Lift Aggies To Victory Over Northern Colorado

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Down by two with 37 seconds to play, senior forward Sherell Neal tied the game with 22 second left and then junior guard/forward Brittany Henderson put the Aggies up for good with two free throws with 11 second remaining to give the New Mexico State women’s basketball team a 69-67 victory over Northern Colorado, Friday at the Pan American Center.

The Aggies win in the first day of the Thanksgiving Classic gives NMSU just its sixth 3-0 start in program history, as New Mexico State pulled out the victory with timely buckets and key defensive stops.

UNC’s junior guard Whitley Cox had a chance to tie the game with a 15-foot jumper from the elbow as time expired, but the Aggie defenders were right in her face forcing a bad shot to secure the victory. Aggies Win Opener As Neal Eclipses 1,000 Career Points Mark

IRVINE, CA – Senior forward Sherell Neal became the 16th Aggie ever to score over 1,000 career points as she led the New Mexico State women's basketball team to a 65-61 victory over UC Irvine in NMSU's first game of the season Friday evening at Crawford Court.

Neal finished with a game-high 19 points to go along with 11 rebounds in the victory. Senior forward Anikia Jawara added in 16 points and nine rebounds while junior Tyshae Walton scored 10 points of her own.

Midway through the second half UCI had all the momentum and took a three-point lead, its largest of the game before senior guard Monique Bribiescas took a charge on a UCI fast break opportunity. Neal came right back and knocked down NMSU's (1-0) only 3-pointer of the game and the Aggies got a nine point lead which they never relinquished.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggies Roll Over Trinity Western In Final Canadian Exhibition Game

LANGLEY, B.C., Canada – Senior Anikia Jawara scored 13 points for the New Mexico State women's basketball team who outscored the Trinity Western Spartans 22-8 in the second quarter in route to a 30-point, 79-49 victory Sunday evening at the David Einarson Gym.

The game was Aggies' final of its foreign exhibition tour in the Vancouver, British Columbia area. NMSU went 2-1 on its trip after beating the University College of the Fraser Valley Saturday afternoon before falling to defending CIS national champion Simon Fraser later that evening.

11 of the 14 Aggies who played Sunday evening were able to score and NMSU's defense suffocated the Spartans and held them to just 29 percent shooting from the field.

After a close first quarter, the Aggies were fueled by their second quarter outburst and from there on out it was all New Mexico State as its strict defense prevented Trinity Western from ever getting back in the game.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggie Women's Basketball Splits Exhibition Games On Day One of Canada Trip

ABBOTSFORD/BURNABY, B.C., CANADA - The New Mexico State women's basketball team opened up its first of three exhibition games in British Columbia, Canada with a 70-55 victory over the University College of Fraser Valley Cascades Saturday afternoon in the Envision Athletic Center.

Head coach Darin Spence was impressed with how his team played in its first action of the exhibition tour and felt that his seniors came out and led the team to the victory.

"We played very well this afternoon considering it's only September 1st," Spence said. "We started off a little nervous early in the game, but we came out in the second half and played solid defense. UCFV is a solid team; they were very scrappy and shot the ball well."

The Aggies were able to share the playing time against the Cascades, as Spence is playing with different lineups to what works best for his team. All four freshmen saw the court in the first game.  Continue Reading This Post >>
