Aggie Volleyball Falls At UMKC 3-1

KANSAS CITY, MO - The New Mexico State volleyball team lost for the second time this season to Missouri-Kansas City after falling in four sets, 25-11, 25-20, 23-25, 25-12, on Saturday afternoon to the Kangaroos.

The Aggies (16-10, 10-4 WAC) finish in second place in the Western Athletic Conference behind UMKC (24-5, 12-2), which had its greatest season in program history.

NM State heads into the WAC Tournament as the No. 2 seed, which carries with it a first-round bye and an automatic placement in the tournament semifinals.

The Aggies struggled from the get go on Saturday. The ‘Roos outhit NM State .284 to .116 as the Aggies had a total of 25 service errors. Only junior Gwen Murphy hit at or above .200 for NM State, and she was right at .200.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggie Volleyball Sweeps Chicago State; Sets Up Showdown For WAC Regular Season Title

CHICAGO, IL - The New Mexico State volleyball team set up a showdown for a share of the Western Athletic Conference regular-season crown by easily handling Chicago State on Thursday in straight sets, 25-11, 25-16, 25-11.

The Aggies (16-9) move to 10-3 in WAC play and will face Missouri-Kansas City (23-5) on Saturday for a share of the WAC title on the line. The ‘Roos also won in straight sets on Thursday to move to 11-2 in the conference, a record that includes a win in Las Cruces earlier in the season over NM State.

A win on Saturday in the conference finale will give the Aggies a share of the WAC regular-season title for the second time in the program’s history as they also shared the WAC crown with Hawai’i in 2008. A loss would give UMKC the regular-season title and No. 1 seed in next week’s WAC Tournament and drop NM State to the second seed.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggies Defeat UTPA 3-1, Pull Within One Game Of First Place In WAC

EDINBURG, TX - The New Mexico State volleyball team remained perfect (11-0) versus Texas-Pan American after defeating the Broncs Saturday afternoon in four sets, 25-21, 23-25, 25-21, 25-12, to improve to 15-9 overall and 9-3 in Western Athletic Conference play.

The Aggies often struggled to find continuity, but in the end used what has been their calling card all year, defense, to win their third-straight match. NM State held the Broncs to a total .085 hitting percentage, including a -.091 percentage in set three and a .000 percentage in the final set.

Juniors Bradley Nash and Nathalie Castellanos each finished with 11 kills for the Aggies while Gwen Murphy and senior Shelbi Goode each had 10 kills. Goode has made the most of her final stretch as an Aggie, finishing with double-digit kills for the second-straight match while also leading NM State on Saturday with a career-high .421 hitting percentage.  Continue Reading This Post >>

NM State Picks Up Win On Senior Day

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The New Mexico State volleyball team won its second-consecutive four-set match after defeating Utah Valley on Saturday afternoon, 28-26, 25-20, 18-25, 25-21, inside the Pan American Center.

Saturday’s match was the final one for the Aggies at home this season. With the win NM State improves to 14-9 overall and remains in second place in the Western Athletic Conference with an 8-3 conference record. The team finishes with an 8-4 record inside the Pan American Center.

The Wolverines fall to 10-16 and under .500 in the WAC at 5-6.

Junior Nathalie Castellanos led the Aggies by tying a season high with 12 kills. She also had 12 kills against Utah Valley the first time the two teams met this season. Castellanos also finished with a match-high .423 hitting percentage.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggie Volleyball Downs Seattle In Four Sets

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The New Mexico State volleyball team made up for an earlier loss this season to Seattle U by defeating the Redhawks on Thursday night in four sets, 25-16, 19-25, 25-19, 25-20, inside the Pan American Center.

The Aggies (13-9) now find themselves alone in second place in the Western Athletic Conference with a 7-3 record after Bakersfield lost to conference-leading Missouri-Kansas City on Thursday. Seattle (9-13), which entered only a half a game behind NM State in the WAC standings, falls to 5-4 in conference play.

In a matchup of the top-two blocking teams in the WAC, the Aggies outblocked the top blocking team in the conference 9-8, led by redshirt freshman middle blocker Sasha-Lee Thomas who finished with seven total blocks.

NM State also outhit the Redhawks .256 to .124 and had 57 kills to Seattle’s 40.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggie Volleyball Falls In Five Sets At Grand Canyon

PHOENIX, AZ - The New Mexico State volleyball team put itself in a 2-0 hole on Saturday afternoon but rallied to tie the match at two sets apiece versus Grand Canyon. Unfortunately, the Aggies could not finish off the comeback and lost to the ‘Lopes in five sets, 25-22, 25-23, 23-25, 21-25, 15-11.

NM State, which was trying to win its first match of the season after losing the first set, moves to 12-9 overall and 6-3 in Western Athletic Conference play. Grand Canyon picks up its first-ever win versus the Aggies (1-6) to move to 14-9 and 4-6 in the WAC.

Just as the score, the stat sheet shows how evenly the match was played. Both teams finished with 63 kills, the Aggies won the dig battle 99-97 and the assist battle 61-57 while the ‘Lopes outhit NM State .176 to .157.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggie Volleyball Holds Off Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, CA - Although at times it seemed in jeopardy in the final set, the New Mexico State volleyball team pulled off a four-set Western Athletic Conference win over Bakersfield, 25-21, 25-19, 18-25, 28-26, on Thursday night.

The Aggies and Roadrunners both came into the match at 5-2 and in a tie for second place in the WAC. With the win NM State, which is 12-8 overall, improves to 6-2 in conference play and not only holds a one-game lead over Bakersfield but also holds the tiebreaker after sweeping both matches this season over the Roadrunners who fall to 9-12 overall.

NM State, the conference leader in opponent’s hitting percentage, held Bakersfield to an overall hitting percentage of .198, including a .051 percentage in the first set and a .000 percentage in set number two. The Aggies also had a season-high 15 team blocks, led by middle blocker Sasha-Lee Thomas who finished with eight total blocks.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggie Volleyball Swept By Rival Lobos

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The New Mexico State volleyball team lost in straight sets to state rival New Mexico on Thursday, 25-22, 25-19, 25-20, inside the Johnson Center on the UNM campus.

A couple of days after hitting at their highest percentage all season versus Chicago State (.398), the Aggies (11-8) were held to their second-lowest percentage of the season after finishing with a .058 hitting percentage. The Lobos (12-9), meanwhile, finished with a .227 percentage.

For the one of the few times all season, NM State was also outblocked in a match after UNM won the blocking game 10.5 to nine.

Freshman Jordan Abalos led the Aggie attack with seven kills while setters Taylor Livoti and Ashlyn Brown both finished with double-digit assists for the second-straight match, Livoti with 17 and Brown with 10.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggie Volleyball Sweeps Chicago State

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State volleyball team got its third home sweep of a Western Athletic Conference opponent this season after defeating Chicago State, 25-13, 25-19, 25-15, on Saturday afternoon inside the Pan American Center.

The Aggies pick up their 11th win of the season (11-7) and move to 5-2 in WAC play. The Cougars remain winless in conference play at 0-7 and fall to 6-15 overall.

As has been the case all season, defense was once again served for NM State. The Aggies held Chicago State to a .034 hitting percentage, the fifth time this season the conference leader in the category has held an opponent under a .100 hitting percentage. Aggie Volleyball Drops Five Set Match Against UMKC

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The New Mexico State volleyball team jumped ahead early against Western Athletic Conference leader Missouri-Kansas City but could not hold a two-set lead, eventually losing to the ‘Roos in a five-set thriller, 17-25, 20-25, 25-17, 25-23, 15-13, on Thursday night inside the Pan American Center.

The Aggies, who lost their first WAC match at home in 12 matches, a streak that dates back to 2012, fall to 4-2 in WAC play and 10-7 overall while UMKC remains perfect at 5-0 in the WAC and improve to 17-3 overall with its 13th-consecutive win of the season.

Junior Bradley Nash led the NM State attack with a match-high 15 kills and a .375 hitting percentage. Fellow juniors Gwen Murphy and Nathalie Castellanos also had double-digit kills as each finished with 10 kills.  Continue Reading This Post >>
