LOGAN, UT – For the second straight year the New Mexico State volleyball team (10-7, 5-1) played and defeated Utah State on the date of October 4. This time NMSU swept the Aggies from Utah (25-19, 25-21, 25-22) at Dee Glen Spectrum in Logan, Utah.

Senior Lindsey Yon has been the constant for NMSU in 2008 and was the leader for the Aggies as she tallied a match-high 20 kills and had a near double-double as she added eight digs on the evening. Yon hit the ball accurately as she hit .366 on 41 attempts. Head coach Mike Jordan knows what type of production he can get from Yon when she puts in the kind of effort she did against USU.

"She was an all-American tonight, and it’s a good thing she’s on our team," Jordan said. "She not only hit the ball well, but she worked hard and passed fantastic."  Continue Reading This Post >>

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - New Mexico State (6-6, 1-0 WAC) senior libero Krystal Torres broke the all-time career dig record as the Aggies swept Fresno State (3-7, 0-1 WAC), 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-20), Thursday, Sept. 18 at the Pan American Center.

Torres' game-high 17 dig effort sprung her overall career record to 1,597, breaking Vanessa White's 19-year old record of 1,594.

Head coach Mike Jordan said he was very proud of Torres for breaking the record which was held for almost two decades.

"Krystal is an amazing athlete. She has worked really hard and deserves everything she earns," Jordan said. "Everyone played hard tonight. I really think our pre-conference schedule was good for us."

Senior outside hitter Lindsey Yon led the Aggies' offense with a game-high 12 kills, while sophomore Krista Altermatt added nine kills.   Continue Reading This Post >>

PALO ALTO, CA - The New Mexico State volleyball team (5-6) came out of the Stanford Tournament with a 3-1 win over UC-Santa Barbara (3-5) at Maples Pavilion in Palo Alto, Calif., Saturday, Sept. 13.

The Aggies won (25-14, 25-22, 23-25, 25-18) with three players getting double-digit kills on the evening. Senior Lindsey Yon (San Antonio, Texas) had 18 kills, senior Amber Simpson (Quincy, Ill.) had 11 kills and junior Krista Altermatt (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) had a double-double with 12 kills and 13 digs. Head coach Mike Jordan knows that it takes a total team effort to pick up wins like this.

"We came together as a team and were much better offensively today," Jordan said. "Of course Santa Barbara is not the same caliber as Stanford and Santa Clara, but we have learned a lot about ourselves with our schedule so far."  Continue Reading This Post >>

The Aggie volleyball team lost 3-0 to Santa Clara tonight dropping the sets by scores of 25-23, 25-18 and 25-20. The Aggies controlled the first set going up 16-9 before Santa Clara came storming back to tie the set at 21 apiece. The Aggies and Broncos traded points to 23 and then the Broncos put the set away winning the final two points. Set two the Aggies fell behind 20-10 before putting on a mini-run to get the match to 24-18 but the deficit proved to be too much and the Aggies lost 25-18.

Set three was unlike anything we can ever remember from the Aggies. They fell behind 9-0 to start the match. The Aggies have done that to opponents many times but we cannot remember the last time the Aggies were held scoreless that long to start a set. The Aggies trimmed the deficit a little bit getting two within seven at 14-7 but a surge by the Broncos put them ahead 22-10 and it looked like the Aggies were in for a ugly loss. However, the Aggies did not quit and they pulled to within just four points at 24-20 but once again the very large early deficit was too much to overcome. We'll have more thoughts on tonight's match in tomorrow's edition of The Daily Aggie.

The Aggies are now 4-6 on the season and take on UC-Santa Barbara tomorrow evening at 5:30 p.m. MDT.

The Aggie volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to No. 7 Stanford on Thursday evening in the first match of the Stanford Invitational. The Aggies lost the first and second sets by similar margins at 25-17 and 25-16 but coming out of the intermission the Aggies hung tough with the Cardinal losing 26-24 in the third set.

Lindsey Yon led the Aggies with 10 kills while Amber Simpson added nine kills. The Aggies hit .053 in the first set, .000 in the second set and .091 in the third set. The Aggies were bothered once again by the opponent's block as Stanford recorded 12 blocks. The loss drops the Aggies to 4-5 on the season.

The Aggies take on Santa Clara on Friday afternoon with the match set to start at 5:30 p.m. MDT.

The Aggies suffered a 3-1 loss to Utah on Sunday evening in the final match of the Hotel Encanto Volleyball Classic. The Aggies lost the first set 25-18, won the second set 25-19 and then lost the final two sets 25-20 and 25-21. to drop the match 3-1. The Aggies have lost back to back matches for just the sixth time since the 2003 season but the second time this season. The Aggies finished the five matches in five nights with a 3-2 record. The Aggies will travel to Palo Alto, CA for the Stanford tournament where they'll take on host Stanford on Thursday night, Santa Clara on Friday night and UC-Santa Barbara on Saturday night.
