NMSU Volleyball Sweeps UMKC To Close Out WAC Regular Season Play

Written By: NM State Athletic Dept.

KANSAS CITY, MO - Behind a trio of players with double-digit kills, the NM State volleyball team wrapped up the regular-season with a 3-0 sweep of UMKC (25-19, 25-19, 25-22) Saturday afternoon on the WAC Digital Network.

How It Happened:
Set No. 1 was no cakewalk for NM State as UMKC (15-12, 8-6 WAC) went point for point with the Aggies (23-6, 13-1 WAC) until Jordan Abalos’ kill gave NM State the 12-11 lead. From there, the duo of Abalos and Sasha-Lee Thomas teamed up for six of the nine kills to give the Aggies the first set.

Much like the first set, the trio of Abalos, Thomas and Kassandra Tohm led the way for New Mexico State. Abalos again broke the deadlock in the second set that gave NM State the lead for good.  Continue Reading This Post >>

NMSU Volleyball Survives Five Set Match At Chicago State, Clinches WAC Regular Season Title

Written By: NM State Athletic Dept.

The win also secured the No. 1 seed for NM State at the upcoming WAC Tournament (Nov. 17-19), which will be held in the friendly confines of the Pan American Center where the Aggies have won 41 matches the last four seasons.

"We didn't play well until partway through the fourth set," head coach Mike Jordan said. "We struggle being function for too long, but when we play well we're fun to watch. Megan Hart stepped up and made some big plays for us."

NMSU Volleyball Falls To CSU Bakersfield 3-1 In Home Finale

Written By: NM State Athletic Dept.

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - After the opening set, New Mexico State (20-6, 10-1 WAC) could not find a rhythm or clean up the errors as they fell to CSU Bakersfield (10-13, 7-3 WAC) 25-14, 18-25, 18-25, 25-19 in their home finale. The loss snapped a streak of 24-straight Western Athletic Conference wins for NM State. However, the Aggies still hold a two-game lead in the WAC with three matches left in the regular season.

NM State was paced by sophomore Tatyana Battle who set a new career high serving up five aces to go along with her 11 kills, 12 digs and three blocks. Junior Jordan Abalos contributed with nine kills, 12 digs and three blocks. Junior Sasha-Lee Thomas added eight kills and seven blocks.  Continue Reading This Post >>

NMSU Volleyball Completes Season Sweep Of Grand Canyon

Written By: NM State Athletic Dept.

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - New Mexico State (20-5, 10-0 WAC) completed the season sweep of Grand Canyon (4-17, 0-9 WAC) with a 25-23, 25-18, 25-11 victory on Thursday. With the win, the Aggies have now racked up 12 seasons of 20 wins or more in the Mike Jordan era.

“This was a solid win,” said head coach Mike Jordan. “The first set was pretty close, but we were able to jump out to leads in the second and third sets. We made a lot of errors in the first set, but we settled down, started playing loose and served the ball better. I think our athletic ability helped a lot; we are a more athletic team. If you get teams out of system and are more athletic, you will beat them most of the time. We were able to do that, and I’m really proud of how efficient we were in sets two and three.”  Continue Reading This Post >>

NMSU Volleyball Survives Five Set Road Test At Utah Valley

Written By: NM State Athletic Dept.

OREM, UT - Sophomore Tatyana Battle had arguably the best match of her career on Thursday, as she led New Mexico State (18-5, 8-0 WAC) to a 22-25, 25-22, 25-21, 26-28, 15-7 victory over Utah Valley (9-12, 5-3 WAC). With the win, the Aggies extend their conference win streak to 22 matches.

“I like the persistence of our team,” said head coach Mike Jordan. “We bounced back from our worst serving match with our best serving match of the year, and that was key. When our outside hitters start making good attack choices more often, stop hitting low into blocks and our block starts jumping bigger and stuffing balls to the floor, we are just those things away from being a great team. I’m proud of our effort, especially with three freshmen on the floor at times. I’m proud of the effort and happy we came out with the win.”  Continue Reading This Post >>

NMSU Volleyball Falls In Four Sets At UNM

Written By: NM State Athletic Dept.

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - After taking the opening set, New Mexico State (17-5, 7-0 WAC) dropped the next three sets to New Mexico (11-11, 1-7 MW) in a 25-20, 26-28, 17-25, 23-25 loss in the Battle of I-25. The loss snapped an 11-game winning streak by the Aggies.

Three Aggies logged double digit kills in the defeat. Junior Sasha-Lee Thomas put up 15 kills and a season-high seven blocks. Juniors Jordan Abalos and Kassandra Tohm posted 14 and 10 kills apiece, respectively.

NM State looked prepared as they opened on a 3-0 run. This quickly devolved into a point-for-point shootout, as both teams traded points most of the set. The Aggies finally broke away at 20-19, and eventually took their only set 25-20.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggie Volleyball Sweeps Chicago State

Written By: NM State Athletic Dept.

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - New Mexico State (17-4, 7-0 WAC) came away with a 25-19, 25-19, 25-20 sweep over Chicago State (3-18, 1-6 WAC) on Saturday to close out the four-match homestand and the first part of the Western Athletic Conference schedule.

“I am pleased for the most part with how we played today,” said head coach Mike Jordan. “I don’t know if we are capable of hitting for a big percentage very often, because of how error prone we are. Our kill numbers are good, and we played pretty good defense most of the time. Our blocking could be better, but that is a work in progress. I think it is a matter of cleaning up the errors. Chicago State was a little shorthanded today, with their best attacker not being able to play. We took advantage of that a little, and played well enough to win.”  Continue Reading This Post >>

NMSU Volleyball Sweeps I-10 Rival UTEP

Written By: NM State Athletic Dept.

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - New Mexico State (14-4, 4-0 WAC) notched their fourth-straight sweep over UTEP (3-13, 1-2 C-USA) with a 26-24, 25-23, 25-15 victory in front of a raucous crowd on Wednesday.

“It is always good to get wins in these rivalry matches,” said head coach Mike Jordan. “However, we made a lot of bad attack choices in the first two sets. We got out of system and they blocked some balls, plus we made too many errors and gave them points. In the third set, we only made three errors. That is really what it boiled down to.”   Continue Reading This Post >>
