Aggie Volleyball Sweeps Utah State

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The New Mexico State volleyball team won its second conference match of the week sweeping the defending Western Athletic Conference Tournament Champions in the Pan American Center, Saturday, Oct. 1.

NM State moves to 13-4 overall and 3-0 in WAC play after defeating the Aggies from Utah 25-13, 25-22, 25-18. Senior setter Jennah DeVries tallied a double-doublewith 36 assists and 13 digs, while adding three kills. Freshman outside hitter Meredith Hays struggled offensively but still managed to post 10 kills on the evening. Middle hitters Desiree Scott and Michelle Kuester combined for 13 kills while senior Kelsey Brennan, who played on the right side, posted nine kills, while hitting .533.

"The middles are getting better and I think we should set them a little more," head coach Mike Jordan said. "Utah State is a pretty solid team and they came out and competed well tonight."  Continue Reading This Post >>

Phillips Records Career-High In Digs As Aggies Defeat Vandals 3-1

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The New Mexico State volleyball team defeated Idaho in four sets (25-18, 14-25, 25-23, 25-22) in the Pan American Center, Thursday, Sept. 29, to move to 2-0 in Western Athletic Conference play and 12-4 overall.

The Aggies were led by senior libero Kelsi Phillips who tallied a career-high 30 digs, while freshman Meredith Hays tallied a match-high 19 kills to go along with 10 digs for her seventh double-double of the year. Senior setter Jennah DeVries was the director of the Aggie offense as she handed out a match-high 42 assists and added six kills, which ties her career-high.

The Aggies served tough in set one and held the Vandals to a .068 hitting percentage to win 25-18. NM State jumped out to an early 5-0 lead and eventually took an 11-point lead after a kill by sophomore outside hitter Stephanie Ziegler, who ended the night with five kills and 13 digs.

Set two was quite the opposite for the Aggies as Idaho took it 25-14. NM State was held to a .025 hitting percentage, while committing nine errors. After falling behind 5-2, NM State fought back to pull within one at 8-7. The Vandals put together an 8-2 scoring rally during the set before an ace ended it at 25-14.

The Aggies regrouped after the intermission and won in set three, which saw six ties and four lead changes before NM State pulled off the 25-23 victory. It was back-and-forth until NM State extended its lead to three at 13-10 on a kill by sophomore Deirdre Pajares. A kill by Hays late in the set gave NM State a 23-19 lead before ending the set with her eighth kill of the evening to get the win.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggies Sweep Louisiana Tech To Open WAC Play

The New Mexico State volleyball team opened WAC play with a sweep of Louisiana Tech winning 25-19, 25-20, 25-19. With the victory the Aggies improve to 11-4 on the season and 1-0 in the WAC, their 12th consecutive home conference opener.

After falling behind 15-9 in the first set, the Aggies dominated the remainder of the set as they would trail by just two at 15-13 at the media timeout. The Aggies would take over the lead at 17-16 and extended their lead to four at 21-17. LA Tech would answer with back-to-back points to cut the Aggies' lead to two at 21-19 but New Mexico State would shut down the Lady Techster attack the rest of the way en route to a 25-19 first set victory.

The two teams played close early in the second set as the Aggies held a slim 10-9 lead. A pair of LA Tech miscues would give the Aggies a 12-9 advantage. Louisiana Tech would tie the set at 14 but New Mexico State would push their lead out to two points at 16-14. The Lady Techsters cut the Aggies' lead to just one at 17-16 and again at 20-19 after the Aggies had pushed the lead to three at 20-17. The Aggies would go on a 3-0 run to take a 23-19. Duquesne Ends Aggies' Six Match Win Streak

EVANSTON, IL - The New Mexico State volleyball team was swept for the first time in 2011 losing to Duquesne 25-18, 33-31, and 25-18, at the Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston, Ill., Saturday, Sept. 17, dropping to 10-3 on the year.

This marks the first time the NM State has been swept since losing 3-0 to Utah State in the final regular-season match of the 2010 season. NM State hit .130 as a team compared to the Dukes' .202 hitting percentage in the match. The Aggies posted 38 kills with senior middle hitter Kelsey Brennan leading the way with 10 kills and a .500 hitting percentage.

As the Aggies ran a 6-2 offense, senior Brynja Rodgers tallied her first double-double of the year finishing the match with 12 assists and 10 digs. Senior setter Jennah DeVries ended the morning with 20 assists and senior libero Kelsi Phillips had a team-high 15 digs.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Hays Finishes With 21 Kills As Aggies Defeat Colgate 3-1

Meredith HaysThe Aggie volleyball team picked up their 10th victory of the season on Friday afternoon as they held off Colgate 3-1 winning set one 25-23, set two 25-21 before falling 25-21 in set three but rallying to win set four 25-21. Meredith Hays recorded her fifth double-double of the season finishing with a career-high 21 kills and 15 digs.

The Aggies jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the first set and maintained their seven point advantage at 17-10 but Colgate would rally winning the next four points to cut the Aggies' lead to just three at 17-14. After a pair of kills by Desiree Scott and Meredith Hays followed by an attack error by Colgate's Diane Seely, the Aggies would again lead by seven at 21-14, however, the Raiders would go on an 8-1 run to cut the Aggies' lead to just one at 22-21. A Hays kill would put the Aggies up 23-21 but Colgate would again trim the lead to just one point twice more at 23-22 and 24-21 before a kill by Hays gave the Aggies the 25-23 set victory.

In the second set the Aggies and Raiders would match points through the first eight points but back-to-back points by Colgate would give them a 10-8 lead. The two teams would again trade points back and forth with the set remaining tied at 14 after an attack error from Meredith Hays. The Aggies would take a three point advantage on kills by Hays, Michelle Kuester and Jennah DeVries to go up 17-14 and would push their lead to four at 22-18. The Raiders would get to within two points at 23-21 but a kill by Desiree Scott would give the Aggies set point and Stephanie Ziegler would give the Aggies a 25-21 victory with a service ace.  Continue Reading This Post >>
