Aggie Volleyball Ends Season With 3-2 Loss To Utah State In WAC Semifinal

LAS VEGAS, N.M. - The New Mexico State volleyball team fell in five sets (23-25, 25-20, 21-25, 25-22, 14-16) to Utah State in the semifinal of the 2010 Western Athletic Conference Tournament as senior Kayliegh Giddens marked a career-high 29 kills.

The Aggies fell behind two sets to one and tied it up at 2-2 after taking set four 25-22. The Aggies took the momentum into set five staying with Utah State and eventually taking a 13-10 lead, but NM State errors proved to be the difference as USU won 16-14.

Giddens also tallied her 12th double-double of the year as she added 22 digs, while senior Whitney Woods marked 19 kills and freshman Rocio Gutierrez tallied 14. Aggie Volleyball Swept By Boise State

The Aggie volleyball team was denied their 19th victory of the season falling in three sets to Boise State on Saturday night. The Aggies dropped the first set 25-20, lost in extra points 26-24 in the second set and then fell 25-23 in the third set. The Aggies fall to 18-11 overall and 12-3 in WAC play as the Broncos' victory snapped a 13-match winning streak by the Aggies in the series.

Kayleigh Giddens recorded 11 kills on the night tying her for the single-season record at 499 kills, however, the Aggies hit just .032 as a team committing 27 attack errors.

The Aggies and Broncos played evenly in the first set early on as the set was tied 8-8. The Aggies would take a 10-8 lead after a kill by Giddens and an attack error by Cailin Fellows but the Broncos would tie the set at 10 and continue on a run to take a three point lead at 13-10. They would extend the lead over the Aggies to four points going up 15-11 and would push the lead to five at 17-12. The Aggies would score three in a row to force a Bronco timeout but the Broncos would push their lead back to five points at 22-17. The Aggies would close to within three points at 23-20 after a service error by Breann Nesselhuf but attack errors by Kelsey Brennan and Desiree Scott would give the set to the Broncos 25-20.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggie Volleyball Rallies For 3-1 Victory Over Idaho In Moscow

Rocio GutierrezThe Aggie volleyball team overcame a first set loss and an eight point deficit in the second set to win their match over Idaho 3-1 on Thursday night in Moscow, ID. The Aggies also clinched first round bye in the upcoming WAC tournament with the victory as they have assured themselves of no worse than a second place finish in the regular season. The Aggies lost the first set 25-20, rallied from down 21-15 to win the second set 25-23 and rode big leads in the third and fourth sets to 25-21 and 25-20 set victories.

The Aggies got a career-high 17 kills from Rocio Gutierrez on 41 swings with just five hitting errors. Gutierrez also recorded three block assists and a solo block and finished just two digs shy of a double-double. "Rocio Gutierrez was fantastic, for her to do what she did was really good," said head coach Mike Jordan after the match. "She passed the ball real well and served it great. She did a good job and put a lot of pressure on their outside hitters."

The Aggies also got 19 kills from Kayleigh Giddens who now needs just 12 kills to become the all-time single-season kills leader and the first Aggie to record 500 kills. Giddens had a team-high 17 digs and recorded her 12th double-double of the season. Fellow senior Whitney Woods added 12 kills, seven digs and four block assists.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggie Volleyball Fights Past Spartans 3-1

Kayleigh GiddensThe Aggie volleyball team overcame a sluggish performance to defeat San Jose State on Saturday night winning 3-1. Kayleigh Giddens recorded her eighth 20-plus kill match of the season finishing with 22 kills. After losing the first set the Aggies won the final three sets 25-19, 25-17 and 25-20.

The Aggies dropped the first set 29-27. The Aggies trailed much of the early part of the set before tying the set at 12-12. The Spartans would take a 17-15 lead in the set but a 5-1 run would give the Aggies a 20-18 lead. The Spartans would take a 22-21 lead in the set but the Aggies would have set point at 24-23 after a service error by the Spartans' Katie Turner. The Aggies would be unable to end the set as Kayleigh Giddens' hitting error tied the set at 24. The Aggies would have another set point up 25-24, again at 26-25 and once again at 27-26, however, the Spartans would get a kill from Hanah Blume to tie the set at 27-27 and and attack error from Ellen Miks and a block an attack attempt by Whitney Woods would give the Spartans the first set 29-27.

The Aggies would jump to a quick 15-7 lead in the second set but San Jose State would go on a 9-0 run to take a 16-15 lead forcing an Aggie timeout. Out of the timeout the Aggies would retake the lead going up 20-17. The Spartans would cut the lead to two points at 20-18 but the Aggies would score five of the final six points to take the set 25-19.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggie Volleyball Defeats Fresno State 3-1

The Aggie volleyball team survived a bit of a challenge from the Fresno State Bulldogs overcoming a fourth set deficit to take home a 3-1 victory on Thursday night. The Aggies won the first set 25-20 but fell in the second set 25-22. The Aggies rebounded to crush Fresno State 25-15 in the third set and then overcame a late 18-15 deficit to take set four 25-21.

The Aggies led the first set early 7-4 but the Bulldogs rallied to tie the set at 7-7 on a kill by Brianna Clarke. The Aggies would go on an 8-1 run to take a 15-8 lead and pushed their lead to 17-10 but the Bulldogs would make a strong push cutting the Aggie lead to just two points at 19-17. As they had done in the first set in Fresno, the Aggies would take a three point lead at 22-19 however this time they would not allow a Bulldog rally and finished off the set winning 25-20.

The second set saw the Aggies and Bulldogs battle closely through the early part of the set with the two teams tied at 7-7. Fresno State would go on a 3-0 run to take a 10-7 lead but the Aggies would tie the set at 13-13. With the set tied 15-15 the Bulldogs would go on a 4-1 run to take a 19-16 lead. After a timeout by the Aggies, they would cut the lead back down to two points at 19-17. However, the Bulldogs would go on a 3-0 run to push their lead to five points at 22-17. The Aggies would cut the lead to just two at 24-22 but Taylor Horton would record a kill to end the set 25-22.

The Aggies would dominate the third set winning 25-15 after the set saw seven ties early. The Aggies would forge ahead 12-10 and pushed their lead to six points at 20-14 before finishing off the set. The Aggies would record 16 kills agains just four attack errors to hit .387 in the set.

The Aggies would trail the Bulldogs for most of the fourth set and faced a three point deficit at 18-15 before tying the set at 18-18. The Aggies would finish out the set winning 25-21 and winning the match 3-1.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggie Volleyball Swept By No. 5 Hawai'i

The Aggie volleyball team was swept by No. 5 Hawai'i on Sunday night in Honolulu as the Wahine took the match by winning the first set 25-18, the second set 25-10 and then holding off the Aggies 25-23 in the third set. The Wahine hit .384 on the match while the Aggie offense struggled hitting just .140. Kayleigh Giddens was the only Aggie in double-digit kills with a match-high 12 as she hit .194 for the match. Kanani Danielson was the only Wahine is double-digit kills with 11 and hit .240 for the match but also added three service aces, a solo block and two block assists.

The Aggies held an early 7-6 lead on the Wahine in the first set. The two score would be tied at 8-8 on a kill by Whitney Woods but four straight points by the Wahine would give them a 12-8 lead forcing an Aggie timeout. The Aggies would cut the lead back down to two points twice at 18-16 and 19-17 but the Wahine would get a kill by Kanani Danielson followed by a service ace by Danielson to take a 21-17 lead. The Aggies would get a kill from Kayleigh Giddens to cut the lead to three at 21-18 but the Wahine would rattle off four straight points to take the first set 25-18.  Continue Reading This Post >>
