Duquesne Ends Aggies' Six Match Win Streak

EVANSTON, IL - The New Mexico State volleyball team was swept for the first time in 2011 losing to Duquesne 25-18, 33-31, and 25-18, at the Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston, Ill., Saturday, Sept. 17, dropping to 10-3 on the year.

This marks the first time the NM State has been swept since losing 3-0 to Utah State in the final regular-season match of the 2010 season. NM State hit .130 as a team compared to the Dukes' .202 hitting percentage in the match. The Aggies posted 38 kills with senior middle hitter Kelsey Brennan leading the way with 10 kills and a .500 hitting percentage.

As the Aggies ran a 6-2 offense, senior Brynja Rodgers tallied her first double-double of the year finishing the match with 12 assists and 10 digs. Hays Finishes With 21 Kills As Aggies Defeat Colgate 3-1

Meredith HaysThe Aggie volleyball team picked up their 10th victory of the season on Friday afternoon as they held off Colgate 3-1 winning set one 25-23, set two 25-21 before falling 25-21 in set three but rallying to win set four 25-21. Meredith Hays recorded her fifth double-double of the season finishing with a career-high 21 kills and 15 digs.

The Aggies jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the first set and maintained their seven point advantage at 17-10 but Colgate would rally winning the next four points to cut the Aggies' lead to just three at 17-14. After a pair of kills by Desiree Scott and Meredith Hays followed by an attack error by Colgate's Diane Seely, the Aggies would again lead by seven at 21-14, however, the Raiders would go on an 8-1 run to cut the Aggies' lead to just one at 22-21. A Hays kill would put the Aggies up 23-21 but Colgate would again trim the lead to just one point twice more at 23-22 and 24-21 before a kill by Hays gave the Aggies the 25-23 set victory.

In the second set the Aggies and Raiders would match points through the first eight points but back-to-back points by Colgate would give them a 10-8 lead. The two teams would again trade points back and forth with the set remaining tied at 14 after an attack error from Meredith Hays. The Aggies would take a three point advantage on kills by Hays, Michelle Kuester and Jennah DeVries to go up 17-14 and would push their lead to four at 22-18. The Raiders would get to within two points at 23-21 but a kill by Desiree Scott would give the Aggies set point and Stephanie Ziegler would give the Aggies a 25-21 victory with a service ace.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggies Sweep Miners For 14th Consecutive Victory In Rivalry Series

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The New Mexico State volleyball team improved to 9-2 after sweeping UTEP 26-24, 25-23, 25-18 in the Pan American Center, Tuesday, Sept. 13. NM State has not dropped a match to the Miners since Nov. 21, 2004 when UTEP won 3-1 in El Paso. The Aggies are now on a 14-match winning streak over UTEP.

Senior Kelsey Brennan and freshman Meredith Hays powered the offense with 12 and 13 kills respectively with Hays marking the fourth double-double of her career as she added 10 digs. Senior libero Kelsi Phillips also tallied 10 digs and senior setter Jennah DeVries marked a match-high 34 assists.

Although NM State marked more attack errors than the Miners did, the Aggies found a way to come out with the victory. The Aggies tallied 40 kills compared to UTEP's 35 and out-blocked the Miners 10-8. NM State also posted four service aces with sophomore Stephanie Ziegler serving two of them.

"We made a lot of silly errors and I think we can go back and learn a lot from our mistakes," head coach Mike Jordan said. "Sometimes you win ugly, but we were still able to come up with the win."

NM State took an early 5-2 lead in set No. 1 after Hays got the 1,830 fans in attendance on their feet with a monstrous kill. After a service error by the Miners that took the score to 11-6, the Miners would win seven of the next nine points to tie it at 13 all. A huge block by senior Michelle Kuester and Brennan made the score 21-17, but the Miners used a six point rally to take a late 23-22 lead. Aggies Sweep Louisiana And Houston Baptist At CenturyLink Premier Tournament

SAN MARCOS, TX - The New Mexico State volleyball team swept the University of Louisiana (Lafayette) in its first match of the CenturyLink Premier hosted by Texas State winning 25-13, 25-16, 25-16 and followed the victory up with a sweep of Houston Baptist winning 25-15, 25-18, 25-22 in their second match of the day. The Huskies had defeated host Texas State earlier in the day in the Strahan Coliseum in San Marcos, Texas. With the sweep the Aggies improve to 6-2 on the season.

Freshman Meredith Hays led the Aggies with match-highs in kills in both matches as she posted 13 kills against Louisiana (Lafayette) and a career-high 21 kills against the Huskies from Houston Baptist. Hays posted a .395 attack percentage in the second match.

Sophomore Deirdre Pajares ended the day with 13 kills recording seven in the first match and six in the second. Senior middle attacker Kelsey Brennan was steady in both matches providing five kills in each.  Continue Reading This Post >>

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The New Mexico State volleyball team dropped its only match of the Hotel Encanto Classic losing to Louisiana State University in four sets (22-25, 25-22, 23-25, 18-25) at the Pan American Center, Saturday, Sept. 3.

The match was pretty even statistically as both teams hit under .200 and both teams tallied at least 10 blocks. Freshman Meredith Hays led the way offensively posting the first double-double of her career with a team-high 14 kills to go along with 11 digs. Senior libero Kelsi Phillips was the defensive leader, flying all over the court to post a match-high 16 digs.

"Kelsi Phillips passed the ball pretty well for us today and Jennah DeVries set the ball well, but you have to give credit to LSU because they are such a tough and physical team to play against," head coach Mike Jordan said. Aggies Sweep Arkansas-Little Rock

The New Mexico State volleyball team held off a scrappy Arkansas-Little Rock squad on Friday night in the Hotel Encanto Classic as they defeated the Trojans in three sets, 25-21, 29-27 and 25-16. The Aggies were led by freshman Meredith Hays who collected 14 kills and nine digs. Kelsey Brennan added a dozen kills and had five digs two block assists and a service ace. Senior setter Jennah DeVries recorded her fourth double-double of the season finishing with 42 assists and 10 digs and also collected three kills on the night.

The Aggies jumped out to a quick 3-1 lead but the Trojans battled back to tie the set at four apiece. The Aggies would extend the lead out to four points at 10-6 and they would push the lead to six at 15-9. The Aggies would take a 20-12 lead on a server ice by Kelsi Phillips but UALR would cut the Aggies' lead to just three at 22-19 and again at 23-20 but that would be as close as they would get with the Aggies taking the set 25-21.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggies Sweep Grambling To Open Hotel Encanto Tournament

The New Mexico State volleyball team got a balanced offensive performance en route to a sweep of visiting Grambling State on Friday morning in the first match of the Hotel Encanto Classic. The Aggies defeated the Tigers 25-14 in set one and 25-16 in sets two and three. The Aggies had four players with at least seven kills apiece led by middle attacker Kelsey Brennan with nine kills while hitting .500 with just two attack errors.

The Aggies jumped out to an early 6-2 lead in the first set and quickly extended their lead to nine points with a 7-2 run that put them ahead 13-4. The Tigers would claw back into the set going on a 5-0 run to cut the Aggies' lead to four at 13-9 but New Mexico State would put together a 9-3 run to go ahead 22-12 before winning the set 25-14.  Continue Reading This Post >>
