Aggies Sweep Utah State For Seventh Straight Victory

Kelsey BrennanThe Aggie volleyball team won their seventh consecutive match by sweeping Utah State in Logan on Saturday night to improve to 9-1 in WAC play and 15-9 overall. The Aggies rallied to win the first set 25-23, controlled the second set winning 25-18 before holding off the UtAgs 25-21 in the third set.

The Aggies hit .444 for the match and committed just 12 attack errors, four in each set. The Aggies hit .432 in the firs set recording 20 kills then followed that with 17 kills on a .481 hitting percentage and then closed out the match hitting .429 in the third set and recording 19 kills.

Kayleigh Giddens recorded 17 kills on 32 swings with just four attack errors to hit .406 while fellow outside hitter Rocio Gutierrez added 12 kills on 21 swings with just four attack errors to hit .381. Middle blocker Kelsey Brennan also finished with 12 kills and did not make an attack error in 17 swings and finished with a .706 hitting percentage.

The Aggies trailed Utah State 6-2 early in the first set but battled back to tie the set at 8-8. From that point in the set neither team would lead by more than two points as the set saw 10 ties and four lead changes leaving the two teams tied at 22 points apiece. The Aggies would take a 23-22 lead behind a kill from Kelsey Brennan which would force a Utah State timeout. The Aggies would get a kill by Rocio Gutierrez to set up match point at 24-22. Utah State would get a kill by Shantell Durrant to cut the Aggies' lead to 24-23 but the Aggies would close out the set on a kill by Kelsey Brennan winning 25-23.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggies Overcome First Set Loss To Defeat Nevada 3-1

Kayleigh GiddensThe Aggie volleyball team was dominated in the first set against Nevada falling 25-16 but regrouped to take the final three sets 25-22, 25-20 and 25-21 to notch their ninth consecutive victory over Nevada. With the victory the Aggies improve to 8-1 in conference play and 15-9 overall.

The Aggies got a match-high 23 kills from Kayleigh Giddens as she nearly posted her 12th double-double of the season recording nine digs. Setter Jennah DeVries posted her sixth double-double of the season finishing with 42 assists and 11 digs. DeVries also posted five kills in the match and had two service aces.

The Aggies led Nevada 4-3 early in the first set but a 6-0 run gave the Wolf Pack a 9-4 lead. The Aggies would trim the Wolf Pack lead to three points on several occasions, the last time coming at 16-13, hwoever, they would get no closer the remainder of the set. The Wolf Pack would go on a 3-0 run to push their lead to 19-13 and would outscore the Aggies to take the set 25-16. Aggie Volleyball Sweeps Nevada; Finishes Tough Conference Weekend 3-0

The Aggie volleyball team completed their third match in four nights by sweeping Nevada 3-0 on Sunday night. The Aggies won the first two sets in extra points 28-26 and 27-25 and then took over down the stretch of the third set winning 25-20.

Rocio Gutierrez played a nearly flawless match for the Aggies recording 10 kills on 23 swings with just one attack error and also recorded five digs while posting a .391 attack percentage. Kayleigh Giddens finished with a match-high 17 kills while Kelsey Brennan added nine kills on 14 swings with just three attack errors to hit .429 on the night.

With the victory the Aggies improve to 7-1 in league play and 13-9 overall while finishing the three-match weekend stretch at 3-0.

The Aggies jumped out to a quick 5-2 lead in the first set as the Aggies would get kills from Kayleigh Giddens, Desiree Scott and Rocio Gutierrez to go along with a block by Whitney Woods and an attack error by Nevada's Lindsay Baldwin. The Wolf Pack would tie the set at 11-11. The two teams would trade points back and forth and the set would remain tied at 19, however, Nevada would take their first lead of the match as Desiree Scott's attack was blocked by Lindsay Baldwin and Kylie Harrington but the Aggies would come back and tie the set on a kill by Rocio Gutierrez. The Wolf Pack would get a set point at 24-23 on a kill by Erin Garvey but Kayleigh Giddens would tie the set at 24 with a kill. The Aggies would get another kill by Giddens to set up their own set point at 25-24 but the Wolf Pack would get a kill to tie the set at 25. Aggie Volleyball Erases 2-0 Deficit To Stun Idaho 3-2

Rocio GutierrezFor the second straight match the Aggies were forced to play a five-set match but tonight against Idaho it was a welcome sight. The Aggies were dominated through the first two sets losing 25-16 and 25-18 and went into intermission searching for answers. The Aggies came out of the break with the answers they needed and dominated the Vandals through the final three sets 25-17, 25-16 and 15-8 to cap the unlikely comeback. Kayleigh Giddens tied for match-high kills with 18 and added 10 digs for her league-leading 9th double-double. Freshman outside hitter Rocio Gutierrez provided a spark off the bench for the Aggies and recorded 11 kills on 24 swings with just two attack errors for a .375 attack percentage. She also added 11 digs for a double-double.

The Aggies never led in the first set as the Vandals would go on a 5-0 run with the set tied 2-2 to take a 7-2 lead. The Aggies would get no closer than four points at 8-4 as the Vandals slowly added to their lead and led by seven points at 20-13. The Vandals would close out the set 25-16 taking a 1-0 lead.

Set two saw the two teams battle back and forth as the set saw 12 ties as the two teams would be knotted up at 13 points apiece. With the Aggies trailing 16-15, the Vandals would go on a 6-0 run to take a 22-15 lead. The Aggies would get no closer than six points as the Vandals would close out the set 25-18.

At intermission the Aggies were hitting just .100 with 17 attack errors while the Vandals were hitting .426 with just two attack errors.  Continue Reading This Post >>

It looked easy at times and it looked hard at times but in the end the Aggie volleyball team came away with a 3-2 victory over visiting Boise State on Thursday night to improve to 5-1 in WAC play and 11-9 overall. The Aggies dropped the first set 25-20 before winning sets two and three 25-19 and 25-12. The Broncos forced the fifth set by winning set four 25-21 but the Aggies would prevail winning the fifth set easily 15-7.

Kelsey Brennan took over for the Aggies in the fifth and deciding set scoring the final five points of the set via a block assist, three consecutive kills and then a block assist on match point to help the Aggies extend their winning streak over the Broncos to 13 matches.

The Aggies dropped the first set 25-20 after leading 11-8 early. The set would be tied at 15 points apiece before the the Broncos would go on a 5-1 run to take a 20-16 lead. The Aggies would trim the lead to two points at 21-19, however, the Broncos would go back up by four points at 23-19 after a Whitney Woods attack was blocked by Sadie Maughan and Cailin Fellows. The Broncos would take the set 25-20.

The Aggies would fall behind early in set two as they trailed 11-7 after a service ace by Fiona Jones. An Aggie timeout would be called by head coach Mike Jordan and out of the timeout the Aggies would go on a 12-2 run to go ahead 19-13. The Broncos would cut into the Aggies' lead cutting it to just three points at 20-17 after a service error by Kayleigh Giddens, a service ace by Boise State's Amanda Remy and an attack error by the Aggies' Michelle Kuester. The Aggies would call a timeout to try to halt the Broncos' momentum and with the Aggies up 21-18, they would finish the set on a 4-1 run to take the set 25-19 as Kayleigh Giddens recorded the kill on set point.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggie Volleyball Defeats Fresno State 3-1

Kayleigh GiddensThe Aggie volleyball team improved to 4-1 in WAC play as they defeated Fresno State 3-1 on Saturday afternoon. The Aggies dropped the first set 25-23 but bounced back to win the next three sets 25-17, 25-20, 25-14. Kayleigh Giddens continued her solid play finishing with 25 kills while setter Jennah DeVries recorded 54 assists.

The Aggies and Bulldogs battled closely in the first set as the Aggies held an early 9-6 advantage after a kill by freshman middle blocker Desiree Scott. The Bulldogs would cut the Aggies' lead to one at 10-9 on a kill by Lauren Berger but a service ace by Rocio Gutierrez a few plays later would give the Aggies a 13-10 lead. The Bulldogs would respond with three straight points to tie the set at 13-13. The Aggies would regain a two point advantage at 16-14 on a kill by Kayleigh Giddens but two straight points from Fresno State would tie the set at 16 all. The Aggies would score four of the next five points to take a 20-17 lead and would hold a 22-19 lead after a block by Whitney Woods. However, the Bulldogs would take a timeout to try to stop the Aggies' momentum. Out of the timeout the Bulldogs would score six of the final seven points to take the set 25-23.

The Aggies would jump out to a quick 3-1 lead in the second set but the Bulldogs would tie the set at 4-4 on a kill by Brianna Clarke. The Agies would respond with a 4-0 run to take an 8-4 lead but Fresno State would once again answer tying the set at 9-9. Kayleigh Giddens would record back-to-back kills which was followed by a service ace by Kelsey Brennan and another kill by Giddens giving the Aggies a 13-9 lead. The Aggies would maintain their four point advantage at 19-15 on a kill by Kelsey Brennan. The Aggies would end the set on a 6-2 run to take the set 25-17 getting a service ace by Jennah DeVries on set point to seal the set win.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggie Volleyball Cruises To Road Sweep Of San Jose State

Kayleigh GiddensThe Aggie volleyball team used a dominating performance by Kayleigh Giddens who finished with a match-high 20 kills to cruise to their 17th consecutive victory over the Spartans and improve to 3-1 in the WAC and 9-9 overall. The Aggies easily won the first two sets 25-13 and 25-14 and held off the Spartans 25-20 in the third set for the sweep.

The Aggies trailed early in set one 5-3 but turned on the afterburners tying the set at 7-7 and winning seven of the next six of the next seven points to take a 13-8 lead. After a Kayleigh Giddens attack was blocked by San Jose State's Sarah McAtee and Alex Akana to cut the Aggies' lead to 15-10, New Mexico State would go on a 7-0 run fueled by Kayleigh Giddens and Whitney Woods behind tough serving by setter Jennah DeVries.

Giddens would record two kills and a solo block while Woods would get a kill and a block along with freshman middle blocker Desiree Scott. DeVries' strong service was highlighted with a service ace during the run. The Aggies would finish off the set winning 25-13 when SJSU's Caitlin Andre committed a service error.  Continue Reading This Post >>
