Aggies Improve To 2-0 After Impressive 3-1 Victory Over Northern Colorado

DENTON, TX - The New Mexico State volleyball team won its second match of the season 3-1 (25-23, 25-23, 19-25, 25-22) over Northern Colorado in the Mean Green Volleyball Classic, hosted by the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas, Saturday, Aug. 29.

There were four Aggies with double-digit kills on the match as NM State marked 65 kills all together.  Sophomore Kelsey Brennan (Monroe, Wash.) picked up a career-high 13 kills, while hitting an impressive .409 on the match.  Junior Whitney Woods (Midland, Texas) posted 10 kills, senior Krista Altermatt (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) had 16, while junior Kayleigh Giddens (Lubbock, Texas) posted a match-high 17 kills.

"Kelsey (Brennan) is a physically talented and strong kid with a big arm," head coach Mike Jordan said.  "We want her to take over matches.  She is growing and we want her to continue to do that."  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggie Volleyball Opens Season With 3-2 Win Over SMU

DENTON, TX - The New Mexico State volleyball team opened up the 2009 season with a five-set victory over Southern Methodist University 25-15, 22-25, 25-22, 17-25, 16-16 at the Mean Green Volleyball Center in Denton, Texas, Friday, Aug. 28.

Junior Kayleigh Giddens ( Lubbock, Texas) led the Aggie attack as she picked up 21 kills, while senior Krista Altermatt (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) wasn’t too far behind with 18 kills of her own. Junior Whitney Woods (Midland, Texas) and sophomore Kelsey Brennan (Monroe, Wash.) added nine kills each.

Defensively, sophomore Kelsi Phillips led the way with 15 digs with Altermatt picking up her first double-double of the year as she tallied 12 digs. Woods posted seven block assists as Altermatt and Giddens had two solo blocks each.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggies Defeat St. Mary's College, Win First NCAA Tournament Match In Program History

The Aggies lost the first set 25-22 but then rallied to win the next three sets 25-16, 25-21 and 25-15 to win the match 3-1. It's the first victory for the Aggies in the NCAA tournament in program history.

Senior outside hitter Lindsey Yon, fighting bronchitis all week long, led the Aggies with 17 kills. Amber Simpson recorded 11 kills and hit .348. Right side attackers Whitney Woods and Kelli Goodan combined to get 16 kills in the match and had just five hitting errors.

The Aggies will now await the winner of the Cal/Siena match. Tomorrow's match will take place at 9:00 p.m. MST.

Aggie Volleyball Team Falls 3-1 In WAC Tournament Finals

The Aggie volleyball team was unable to bring home the WAC tournament title as they fell in four sets, 19-25, 27-25, 18-25, 9-25. Lindsey Yon led the Aggies with 12 kills, Amber Simpson had seven kills as did Krista Altermatt. Hawaii's Jamie Houston led all players with 22 kills while Aneli Cubi-Otinero had 12.

The Aggies had no service aces and nine service errors on the night while Hawai'i had five service aces and seven service errors. The Aggies hit .148 in set one, .047 in set two, .053 in set three and .028 in set four. Hawai'i hit .265 in set one, .000 in set two, .233 in set three and .519 in set four, something you won't see very often from a Mike Jordan defense. Overall the Aggies hit .063 for the match while Hawai'i hit .229. The Wahine outblocked the Aggies 11-10 on the night.

Amber Simpson, Lindsey Yon and Krystal Torres were named to the All-Tournament team.

The Aggies return to action on Thursday night, Thanksgiving night for Senior Night against Virginia Commonwealth and then travel to Albuquerque to play I-25 rival UNM on Friday evening.

Aggie Football Falls 42-30, Volleyball Wins 3-1

The Aggie football team dropped its home game with Hawai'i 42-30 to drop to 3-6 overall and 1-4 in conference play. Chase Holbrook passed for 394 yards and four touchdowns. Chris Williams had seven receptions for 221 yards and three touchdowns.

The Aggie volleyball team dropped the first set against Fresno State 25-19 but rallied to win the next three sets 25-16, 25-14 and 25-18 to improve to 13-1 in conference play and 19-7 overall. Amber Simpson had 15 kills on 22 attempts for a .682 hitting percentage. Kelli Goodan had seven kills on 13 attempts for a .538 hitting percentage.
