Aggies Take Five Set Battle Over Idaho; Solidify Hold On Second Place In The WAC

Kayleigh GiddensA career high 25 kills from Kayleigh Giddens was just enough as the Aggies won a five set thriller 24-26, 25-19, 25-18, 23-25, 15-13 on Senior Night in the Pan Am. After jumping out to an 8-1 lead early and then a 21-16 lead late in the first set, the Aggies squandered two match point opportunities and Idaho stole set one in extra points 26-24.

The Aggies and Vandals traded points early in set two with the Aggies taking a 14-10 lead. The Aggies extended the lead to 20-14 before closing out the set 25-19.

Set three saw a similar set of events unfold as in set two with the teams trading points early with the Aggies holding a 13-10 lead midway through. Idaho would tie the match at 17 all before the Aggies would go on a 7-0 run behind tough serving from Krista Altermatt to go up 24-17. The Aggies closed out the set on a kill by senior opposite hitter Kelli Goodan, her only kill of the night.

Set four saw the Aggies jump out to a quick 5-1 lead and then led 12-7 midway through the set. Idaho would go on a run 12-5 run to lead the set 19-17. After an Aggie timeout, back-to-back points for the Aggies would tie the set at 19. The teams would trade the next six points leaving the set tied at 22 before back to back attack errors by the Aggies gave Idaho set point at 24-22. The Aggies would stave off one set point but then an attack error by Whitney Woods gave Idaho the set 25-23.

The fifth and deciding set saw the Aggies once again jump out to a quick lead, this team leading 9-3. However, a 9-3 run by Idaho would tie the fifth and deciding set at 12. After an attack error by Kayleigh Giddens gave the Vandals a 13-12 lead, kills by Kayleigh Giddens and Erin Birmingham gave the Aggies a 14-13 lead and match point. Aggies Sweep Broncos To Stay In Second Place In The WAC

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The New Mexico State volleyball team dominated Boise State picking up another sweep (25-16, 25-23, 25-12) in the Pan American Center, Thursday, Nov. 5.

The Aggies go to 15-8 overall and 10-3 in Western Athletic Conference play as junior Kayleigh Giddens (Lubbock, Texas) tallied a match-high 15 kills and sophomore libero Kelsi Phillips (Scottsdale, Ariz.) marked a match-high 14 digs.

The Aggies posted a season-high .356 hitting percentage, while holding the Broncos to a .109 hitting percentage. NM State also out-blocked BSU 10-3 with senior Erin Birmingham (Riverside, Mo.) leading the way with four total blocks.

"I was really happy with our start tonight and being at home really helped," head coach Mike Jordan said. "Overall, I was really happy with the way we played as a team. Kayleigh GiddensLOGAN, UT - The New Mexico State volleyball team swept (31-29, 25-16, 25-21) Utah State in the Dee Glenn Smith Spectrum in Logan, Utah, Saturday, Oct. 31.

Junior Kayleigh Giddens (Lubbock, Texas) led the way for the Aggies as the team goes to14-8 on the season and 9-3 in Western Athletic Conference play. Giddens marked a match-high 17 kills, while also tallying seven digs and two blocks. Fellow junior Whitney Woods (Midland, Texas) put down nine kills on the evening and had five total blocks which included a solo block.

"We did a nice job of slowing them down and we are happy with the team to hold them to .058 on the night," head coach Mike Jordan said. "We are a fun volleyball team to watch when we are playing good and we did a nice job tonight."  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggies Fall 3-1 At Idaho

MOSCOW, ID - The New Mexico State volleyball team fell to Idaho 3-1 (21-25, 25-21, 23-25, 29-31) in Moscow, Idaho, Thursday, Oct. 29.

The Aggies, who fall to 13-8 overall and 8-3 in Western Athletic Conference play, posted a .176 hitting percentage compared to Idaho's .168 hitting percentage. NM State also had more kills than Idaho 63-45. NM State had 35 attack errors and 15 service errors, which was the difference of the match.

Junior Kayleigh Giddens (Lubbock, Texas) had a match-high 18 kills, while junior Whitney Woods (Midland, Texas) added 14 and sophomore Kelsey Brennan (Monroe, Wash.) tallied 12.

The Aggies out dug Idaho 62-51 as sophomore Kelsi Phillips (Scottsdale, Ariz.) led the way as she tied for the match-high of 15 digs. Aggie Volleyball Defeats San Jose State 3-1

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Sophomore Jennah DeVries and junior Kayleigh Giddens set career-highs as the New Mexico State volleyball team defeated San Jose State 3-1 (23-25, 25-16, 25-17, 25-23) in the Pan American Center, Saturday, Oct. 24.

DeVries (Denver, Colo.) marked a career-high five kills while hitting a career-high .714 hitting percentage and added a match-high 46 assists. Giddens (Lubbock, Texas) tallied a career-high 24 kills while hitting .435, committing only four errors on 46 assists.

"She (Giddens) played well today," head coach Mike Jordan said.

Giddens marked her fourth double-double of the season as she added a match-high 13 digs while sophomore Kelsi Phillips (Scottsdale, Ariz.) had 11 digs and DeVries tallied 10.  There were four service aces on the afternoon with Giddens serving up two of them.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggie Volleyball Sweeps Fresno State 3-0 On ESPNU

Kayleigh GiddensBehind a match high 17 kills from Kayleigh Giddens the Aggie volleyball team swept visiting Fresno State 3-0 winning 25-22, 25-20, 25-21 on Thursday night in the Aggies' first nationally televised match in program history.

Giddens hit an impressive .389 on the evening and had an even more impressive 10 kills and no hitting errors in the first set. Giddens also served up two aces and had five digs to round out the evening. Junior opposite hitter Whitney Woods finished with 10 kills on 19 swings with just three hitting errors and hit .368 on the night.

Sophomore setter Jennah DeVries finished with 39 assists, eight digs and added three kills and earned high marks all night from analyst and NCAA champion Holly McPeak.

The only damper on the evening came in the second set when senior outside hitter Krista Altermatt landed on teammate Kelsi Phillips' foot and left the match. Filling in for Altermatt was freshman outside hitter Stephanie Ziegler who finished with seven kills on 16 swings with six attack errors. Ziegler has now filled in for both outside hitters as she previously replaced Kayleigh Giddens when Giddens suffered her ankle injury early in the season.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggie Volleyball Falls 3-1 To No. 3 Hawai'i

The Aggie volleyball team dropped to 11-7 overall and 6-2 in WAC play as they lost 3-1 to No. 3 Hawai'i on Saturday night. After dropping set one 25-14 the Aggies won set two 25-22 after jumping out to a 16-9 lead. In set three the Aggies fell behind 19-9 before staging a furious rally to pull to within just two points at 22-20. However, Hawai'i would win the next two points to go ahead 24-20 before finishing off the set with a 25-21 victory. Then in set four, much like the match in Las Cruces, it was all Hawai'i as they cruised to a 25-8 victory giving Hawai'i head coach Dave Shoji his 1,000th victory.

The Aggies return home to host Fresno State on Thursday night with a special 9:00 p.m. first serve to accommodate the ESPNU broadcast.

Erin Birmingham's Career Night Pushes Aggies Past San Jose State 3-1

The Aggie volleyball team dominated the first two sets against San Jose State on Thursday night winning 25-11 and 25-16 and looked to be well on their way to a quick night. However, San Jose State had other plans. The Spartans regrouped coming out of intermission and dominated the Aggies in set three winning 25-19, just their 10th set victory this season.

The Spartans, having tasted their first set victory over the Aggies since the 2005 season wanted more. SJSU started the match by jumping out to a 7-1 lead. The Spartans would push their lead out to seven points at 11-4 before the Aggies would go on a 7-4 run to cut the deficit to 14-11. A quick timeout by San Jose State appeared to calm the Spartans' nerves as they rattled off three straight points to push the lead back out to six points at 17-11. The Aggies cut the Spartans' lead to 20-15 and then the teams traded the next six points as SJSU lead 23-18 and appeared ready to push the match to a fifth set. However, the Aggies would respond.

After a kill by the Aggies' Kayleigh Gidddens cut the Spartans' lead to 23-19, sophomore setter Jennah DeVries came up to serve and with DeVries on serve the Aggies would win the final six points of the set to escape from Spartan Gym with a 25-23 set victory and a 3-1 match victory.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggies Swept By Lobos; Series Streak Ends At 10

Jennah DeVriesLAS CRUCES, N.M. - The New Mexico State volleyball team fell 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-23) to the University of New Mexico in the Pan American Center, Tuesday, Oct. 13.

It was the first time UNM defeated the Aggies since Sept. 24, 2002. NM State now goes to 10-6 on the year, while the Lobos improve to 13-6. The Aggie were out hit .255 to .073 and out blocked 12-7.

"UNM played very well and we didn't pass the ball very good tonight," head coach Mike Jordan said.

Junior Whitney Woods (Midland, Texas) and sophomore Kelsey Brennan (Monroe, Wash.) marked a team-high nine kills each, while senior Krista Altermatt (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) added eight. Sophomore Kelsi Phillips (Scottsdale, Ariz.) had a team-high 11 digs as Brennan led the way at the net with five block assists.

The Aggies hit .023 in set one and had 10 kills, while posting the same number of blocks as UNM. The Lobos went up 2-0 and never lost the lead winning 25-18. NM State pulled to within two at 12-10 on a block by Brennan and Altermatt, but couldn't hold on to the momentum.  Continue Reading This Post >>
