Aggies Lose 9-7 To Fresno State, Play Game Two For The Title

The Aggie baseball team dropped a heartbreaker to Fresno State 9-7 in the WAC championship game. Because the Aggies had not lost a game in the tournament prior to this loss the Aggies and Bulldogs will face one against at 3:45 p.m. HT (7:45 p.m. MT) in a winner take all game. The Bulldogs rallied from a 7-2 deficit scoring seven unanswered runs against the Aggies. NM State loaded the bases with no one out in the bottom of the ninth but were unable to score any runs as the game ended on a double play ball. The Aggies trailed early 2-0 before scoring four runs in the 4th and three more in the 5th to take a 7-2 lead.

Aggies Survive Against Louisiana Tech 10-9; Will Play For WAC Championship Against Fresno State On Sunday

The Aggie baseball team is one victory away from claiming their first WAC baseball title and an automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals. NM State fell behind early 4-0 against San Jose State and were held hitless through 3.2 inning before exploding for four runs with two outs to tie the game. The Aggies then put together another big inning in the top of the 5th scoring six times to take a 10-4 lead. San Jose State would chip away at the lead scoring single runs in the 6th and 7th innings to cut the Aggie lead to 10-6. Then in the bottom of the 8th inning San Jose State scored three runs to cut the deficit to just one run at 10-9. The Aggies' Justin Cooper came into the game with the bases loaded and two outs and after walking in the Spartans' ninth run he struck out Spartan catcher Anthony Aguilera to get out of the inning.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggies Hang On To Win 6-5 Over Louisiana Tech At The WAC Baseball Tournament

The Aggie baseball team held on for an exciting 6-5 victory over Louisiana Tech on Friday night to advance to the 7:00 p.m. HT game on Saturday evening. The Bulldogs drew first blood in the game scoring a run in the top of the first inning. The Aggies however would answer right back scoring three runs in the bottom of the 1st. Kyle Decater hit a two run shot in the bottom of the 4th inning to give the Aggies a 5-1 lead and then the Aggies would add one more run in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 6-1 lead. Louisiana Tech would not go down without a fight as they closed the gap to 6-4 after a three run bomb by Devon Dageford in the top of the 7th. Freshman Justin Cooper would come in to try to pick up the save for the Aggies and after getting the first two batters out the Bulldogs would cut the lead to one run at 6-5 before Cooper shut the door on the Bulldogs striking out Mark Threlkeld.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggies Take Down Defending Champs 7-4; Earn First Ever WAC Tournament Win

The Aggie baseball team rallied from a 3-2 deficit heading into the eighth inning against three time defending WAC champion Fresno State to win 7-4 on Thursday afternoon in Honolulu, HI. The Aggies earned their first ever WAC tournament victory and in the process dealt Fresno State their first loss in the WAC tournament in the past 13 games. The Aggies jumped on the board early taking a 1-0 lead after the top half of the first inning. However, Fresno State took a 2-1 lead on a two run home run in the bottom of the first inning by the Bulldogs' Dusty Robinson. Fresno State added another run in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Aggies would answer that run in the top of the fifth to pull to within one at 3-2 . The Aggies took the lead 4-3 in the top of the eighth inning but Fresno State would tie the game in the bottom of the eighth inning. The Aggies got their leadoff runner on in the top of the ninth and then with one out the Bulldogs intentionally walked the WAC's RBI leader Bryan Marquez. Steven Anderson then stepped to the plate and delivered a three run home run to give the Aggies a 7-4 lead.

D.J. Simon pitched 6.2 innings giving up three runs striking out seven and walking six. Redshirt freshman Scott Coffman pitched 1.1 innings giving up one run and Jake Wilson came in to pitch the ninth and after getting the first two batters out put men on first and second before striking out the final batter to seal the win and earn the save.

The Aggies will face the winner of the #2 Louisiana Tech/#5 Hawai'i game on Friday at 11:00 p.m. MT (7:00 p.m. HT)

Aggies Lose Game One Of Doubleheader To Louisiana Tech 6-5

The Aggies jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning on the Bulldogs but weren't able to hold on. Louisiana Tech scored four unanswered runs to take a 4-3 lead before the Aggies tied the ballgame in the top of the seventh inning. In the bottom of the seventh inning the Bulldogs hit a two run homer to retake the lead 6-4. The Aggies scored one run in the bottom of the eighth inning to close the gap to 6-5 but in the top of the ninth the Aggies ended the game on a double play as Jeff Farnham struck out and Richard Stout was caught stealing second base.

The Aggies are now 10-11 in conference play and 39-14 overall. The Aggies need to win just one game this weekend to qualify for the conference tournament. The Aggies can also qualify for the conference tournament if either Fresno State or Sacramento State win the four game series between the two teams.

Game two of the doubleheader will begin at approximately 3:15 p.m.

Aggie Baseball Defeats HBU 4-1; Sweeps Series And Improves to 38-10

The Aggies rallied from a 1-0 deficit in the bottom of the 7th inning to take a 4-1 decision over Houston Baptist. The Aggies trailed 1-0 after the first inning but starting pitcher Jared Jordan went 7.2 inning and gave up just four hits after allowing two hits in the first inning. Jordan struck out nine batters and walked just three as he turned in the best performance of the weekend by the Aggie pitching staff. The Aggie offense generated just four hits on the day but walked 10 times. The Aggies scored all four runs in the seventh inning after the Huskies pulled their starting pitcher after he walked back to back batters. Relievers Frankie Duran and Scott Coffman combined to pitch the final 1.1 innings giving up just one hit, no walks and striking out one.

The Aggies improve to 38-10 overall and will face San Jose State this coming weekend in the final home series of the 2009 season.

Aggie Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader 20-10 And 19-9

The Aggie baseball team erased two early deficits to improve to 37-10 on the season after a doubleheader sweep over Houston Baptist on Saturday. After falling behind 7-6 after 3 1/2 innings in game one, the Aggies scored 14 runs over the next four innings to turn a close game into a run-rule rout. Three different Aggies homered as the winds blew out at over 25 mph. Sebastien Vendette pitched 5.0 innings giving up all 10 Husky runs but picked up the win to improve to 7-1.

In game two the Aggies trailed 7-3 after 4 1/2 innings but exploded for 16 runs over the next 5.0 innings including 10 runs in the seventh and eighth which was capped by a pinch hit three run shot by Steven Anderson in the bottom of the eighth to give the Aggies the 10 run lead needed for the run-rule. Tyler Sturdevant went 7.0 innings giving up eight runs, all earned, but picked up his 5th win of the year to improve to 5-4.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggie Baseball Comes From Behind To Win In The 13th, Aggie Softball Swept By La. Tech

The Aggie baseball team won a 13-inning thriller 12-11 against Houston Baptist on Friday night. The victory came courtesy of a wild pitch with the bases loaded. The Aggies are now 35-10 on the season. NM State continues their series with Houston Baptist on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 3:05 p.m.

The Aggie softball team was swept by Louisiana Tech 9-1 in a five inning run-rule loss and then 5-3 in the second game of the doubleheader the losses drop the Aggies to 5th place in the league and they will earn the 5-seed in next week's WAC Tournament. The Aggies are 31-19 overall and 10-9 in league play. The Aggies wrap up the regular season tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 p.m. as they close out the series with Louisiana Tech.

Aggies Lose Heartbreaker 8-7 To Nevada; Split Series 2-2

The Aggie baseball team came from down 4-1 to take a 7-4 lead heading into the bottom of the eighth inning as they hit back-to-back-to-back home runs but couldn't hold on as Nevada scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth to retake the lead 8-7. The Aggies finish the eight game road trip at 4-4 and are 32-8 overall and 7-5 in the WAC.

Aggies Have Another Strong Day On The Diamond

The Aggie softball team swept the season series with Boise State after winning game three of the series 8-4. Freshman Tiare Jennings belted two home runs to become the Aggies' single season record holder for home runs. Jennings has hit 15 bombs this season and three in this series. Angie Ortega and Stacy Lien also hit home runs for the Aggies and Ortega is now tied for second all-time for home runs in a single season with 13. Kim Watson pitched 5.2 innings and picked up the victory for the Aggies to become the all-time career wins leader at New Mexico State. The Aggies improve to 27-14 overall and 7-4 in the WAC.

The Aggies now have a short turnaround as they head to Logan for a doubleheader on Monday followed by a single game on Tuesday.

The Aggie baseball team picked up a 5-3 victory over Nevada to move to 7-4 in WAC play and 32-7 overall. The Aggies' Jared Jordan picked up his 5th victory of the season and Mike Sodders hit a home run and drove in two RBIs for the Aggies. Aggie closer Erik Nyquist picked up his seventh save of the season.

The Aggies and Wolf Pack conclude their series tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 p.m. as the Aggies try to win the series from Nevada.
