Aggies Hammer-Out 20 Runs To Defeat Alabama A&M

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The New Mexico State baseball team (9-10) came back from a 5-0 deficit to hammer Alabama A&M (2-18) 20-6 in seven innings at Presley Askew Field Friday, March 15, 2013.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning before senior right-hander Michael Ormseth settled down and allowed just one more run. Ormseth worked 6.0 innings and struck out eight batters to move to 2-2 on the year. He gave up six hits in the first, but redeemed himself as he gave up just one hit after that.

After being held scoreless in the bottom of the first, NM State caught fire offensively in the bottom of the second scoring eight runs on four hits, while the Bulldog defense helped the Aggie-cause committing three errors. Four of the Aggie runs came on a Tanner Rust grand-slam, while third baseman Bobby Lecount hammered a two-run homer over the leftfield wall.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggies Fall In Ninth To No. 17 Oklahoma, 3-2

NORMAN, OK - The New Mexico State baseball team (8-10) fell 3-2 to No. 17 Oklahoma (14-4) in the final inning of the game, Wednesday, March 13 at L. Dale Mitchell Park in Norman, Okla.

After Oklahoma crossed the plate in the bottom of the first, both teams were scoreless until junior Michael Paulson tallied an RBI double to leftfield that brought in senior Parker Hipp, who got on base with a walk. It was Hipp's 18th walk of the year, which leads the team.

NM State took the lead in the sixth when Bobby Lecount tallied a run on a wild pitch. Lecount got aboard with a walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch and reached third when Paulson flied out to centerfield. Paulson finished the day going 2-of-3 at the dish with an RBI. Aggies Fall 8-0 At No. 17 Oklahoma

NORMAN, OK - The New Mexico State baseball team was shutout for the second time this season as it fell 8-0 to No. 17 Oklahoma in L. Dale Mitchell Park, Tuesday, March 12.

NM State posted only four hits and committed two errors while the Sooners crossed the plate six times on nine hits without committing an error. The Aggies fall to 8-9 on the year while Oklahoma moves to 13-4 overall.

The Sooners got on the board in the bottom of the first and scored again in the bottom of the third to take a 2-0 lead. NM State is now 1-6 when the opponent scores in the first inning and 2-8 when the opposition scores in the first inning.

"It was frustrating to leave people on-base and we are trying to work through these things," head coach Rocky Ward said. "We are figuring out what we can do and we will keep working. Oklahoma is a very good baseball team but I feel that we challenged them."  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggie Come-From-Behind To Win 12-11, Sweep Series With La Salle

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The New Mexico State baseball team moves .500 on the year after coming from behind to win 12-11 over La Salle off a Parker Hipp walk-off single that scored junior Michael Medina in the 10th inning at Presley Askew Field, Sunday, March 10.

The Aggies (8-8), who swept La Salle, fell behind 9-2 after two innings of play before sophomore Trey Higginbothom jumped on the mound in the second inning to stop the bleeding. He worked 3.2 innings and allowed two runs, neither of them earned, while striking out four batters.

"You have to credit La Salle for coming out and giving us the type of game it did," head coach Rocky Ward said. "I am proud of my guys for staying in there and fighting through it for the win."  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggie Baseball Opens La Salle Series WIth 19-8 Victory

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The New Mexico State baseball team opened up a four-game series with La Salle winning 19-8 in eight innings at Presley Askew Field, Friday, March 8. The Aggies improve to 5-8 on the year with La Salle falling to 2-8.

The Aggie bats came to life posting 17 hits, which included a walk-off two-RBI double from junior transfer Jory Goldstrom that brought in junior Michael Medina and freshman Kevin Carswell. That double was Golstrom's first hit of his Aggie career. Medina scored four times as he was walked, hit by a pitch and got on base on a throwing error by the Explorer catcher after striking out.

Junior Tanner Rust played consistently both defensively and offensively as he finished the day collecting three hits to go along with three runs and two RBI. He also added a stolen base, which was his third of the year.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggies Shut Out Wake Forest 4-0 To Close Series

WINTSON-SALEM, N.C. - Senior left-hand pitcher Ryan Beck started his first game of the year and led his team to a 4-0 shutout over Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, N.C., Sunday, March, 3. The Aggies improve to 4-8 on the season and the Demon Deacons are now 9-3.

Beck was very efficient on Sunday, throwing 6.0 innings, striking out seven batters while not walking a single batter. Senior right-hander Casey Collins earned the first save of his career entering the game in the seventh and striking out two. Beck is now 2-0 on the year and might move back into a starting role.

"We had great pitching and nine base hits so it was a good all-around effort today," head coach Rocky Ward said. "It is good to get the win and it is going to be good to get back home and play in front of our fans."

Beck retired 11-of-12 batters from the second-fifth innings as the only batter to reach got on with an error.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggies Lose At Wake Forest, 14-1; Wrap Up Series On Sunday

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The New Mexico State baseball team fell 14-1 to Wake Forest in game two of a three-game series, Saturday, March 2 on Deacon Field. The Aggies fall to 3-8 on the year and the Demon Deacons are now 9-3 after today's win.

Starting pitcher Michael Ormseth fell to 0-2 on the year after he struggled lasting on two-thirds of an inning, tallying two strikeouts. The Aggies used five pitchers on the afternoon marking a total of six K's compared to Wake Forest using three as they combined for three strikeouts as well.

It was a rough start for NM State as the Demon Deacons sent 13 batters to the plate, scoring eight runs on six hits and an error. The Aggies would try to dig out of that hole but score only one run in the top of the third as the first two batters that came to the plate that inning got on with walks.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggies Open Series With 6-1 Loss To Wake Forest

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The New Mexico State baseball team fell 6-1 to Wake Forest in the series opener, Friday, March 1 in Winston-Salem, N.C. The Aggies fall to 3-7 on the year after losing five straight on the road. The Demon Deacons are now 8-3 after today's win.

Freshman Derek Umphres accounted for NM State's only run as he hammered a solo-shot over the leftfield wall in the top of the sixth. Starting pitcher Christopher Bradley was credited with the loss on the afternoon and falls to 0-3 after working 4.2 innings, striking out three batters and giving up five runs.

Relief pitcher Evan Mott finished the fifth inning before Timothy Torsney entered the game to work three innings. He struck out five batters and allowed only one run on two hits.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggies Fall To No. 10 NC State 8-3

RALEIGH, N.C. - The New Mexico State baseball team fell for the second consecutive day to No. 10 North Carolina State dropping the afternoon game 8-3 in Doak Field, Thursday, Feb. 28. The Aggies are now 3-6 this year while the Wolfpack move to 7-1.

Senior starter Adam Mott was credited with the loss after going 5.2 innings, striking out four batters and giving up five runs. The Aggie offense scored their three runs in the top of the fourth and finished the day with six hits and an error. NC State crossed the plate eight times on 11 hits with one error as well.

"It was a well-played game and we are playing a top-ranked opponent on the road," head coach Rocky Ward said. "We need to fine-tune our offense and we can't leave runners aboard the way we did in the sixth. We need to take advantage of opportunities when they are there."  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggies Fall 5-1 To East Carolina

GREENVILLE, N.C. - The New Mexico State baseball team fell 5-1 to East Carolina in the finale of the of the Keith LeClair Classic, Sunday, Feb. 24 in Clark-LeClair Stadium. The Aggies fall to 3-4 on the year while ECU moves to 3-3.

Senior right-hand pitcher Michael Ormseth held the Pirates scoreless through five innings before the host team tallied four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Ormseth falls to 0-1 after marking two strikeouts while giving up two earned runs.

NM State took a brief 1-0 lead in the top half of the sixth thanks to an RBI double by freshman Kent Blackstone. Left-fielder Michael Paulson and pinch-hitter Cody Edwards drew back-to-back two-out walks and Blackstone followed with a double to right field scoring Paulson for the game's first run.  Continue Reading This Post >>
