Aggie Baseball Claims Series Over Seattle With 7-5 Win

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - New Mexico State (27-20, 15-6) held off a late rally by Seattle U (29-18, 16-5) to clinch the series with a 7-5 win on Sunday. Juniors Dan Hetzel and L.J. Hatch helped the Aggies to victory with two RBIs apiece.

The Aggies got on the board first in the second inning, as L.J. Hatch hammered a solo home run to straight away center on a 1-0 pitch. Trey Stine double to left center. Brent Sakurai scored Stine with a base hit to right, putting NM State up 2-0.

Seattle U cut into the lead in the third, as they got a base runner on a single through the left side. A double to right scored the run, pulling the Redhawks with one run at 2-1.

The Aggies pushed the lead back out in the bottom half, as Austin Botello drew a 3-1 walk. Dan Hetzel moved him over with a base hit through the 5-6 hole. Mason Fishback scored Botello with a single to through the right side of the infield.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggie Baseball Rebounds With 8-5 Game Two Win Over Seattle

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - After falling in extra inning on Friday, New Mexico State (26-20, 14-6) bounced back with an 8-5 win over Seattle U (29-17, 16-4) on Saturday. Junior Austin Botello’s 3-for-4 day at the plate with three RBI played a major role in the win, finishing just a double shy of the cycle.

The Aggies came out hot in the bottom of the first, as Daniel Johnson led off with a base hit to short. Johnson was caught stealing second during the next at-bat. Greg Popylisen drew a full count walk. On the first pitch he saw, Austin Botello belted a two-run moon shot to right, putting NM State up 2-0 early.

Seattle U cut the lead to one run in the second. Brock Carpenter, who hit the game tying home run on Friday, unloaded on a 2-2 pitch for a leadoff solo homer.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggie Baseball Falls To Seattle 10-9 In Extra Innings

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - After being down 5-1 after the first inning, New Mexico State (25-20, 13-6) fought all the way back, but ultimately came up short 10-9 against Seattle U (29-16, 16-3) in an 10-inning thriller on Friday.

Seattle U came out white hot to start the game, leading off with a single to center field. Two back-to-back base hits led to both runs scoring on a single to left field. A double to left center scored another run. A single down the left field line scored the fourth and fifth runs of the inning for the Redhawks.

NM State looked to cut into the lead as they came to the plate for the first time in the bottom half of the inning. After watching a pitch for a ball, Daniel Johnson unloaded on the next pitch, sending it over the wall in right for his sixth home run in five games.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggies Baseball Falls To Lobos 3-2

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - New Mexico State (25-19) was unable to get the clutch hits on Tuesday, falling to New Mexico (31-16) 3-2. With the win, the Lobos take the season series 3-1.

The Aggies looked like they would pick up where they left off this past weekend in the bottom of the first inning, as Daniel Johnson blasted a leadoff homer to straight away center. Two batters later, Dan Hetzel unleashed on his own solo round-tripper to right, putting the Aggies up 2-0 early.

Both Steven Butts and Chris Butcher combined to pitch three solid innings out of the gate. Butcher got in a little trouble in the fourth as UNM got back-to-back base hits to lead off the frame. A sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position. A ground out to second scored the run from third, and pulled the Lobos with one run.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Johnson Leads Aggie Baseball To Sweep Over Sacramento State

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - After hitting a two-run and a three-run home run, Daniel Johnson showed out for the third-straight game, helping the Aggies to a 13-6 series sweep over Sacramento State. Johnson’s six RBI on Sunday set a new individual season high for NM State. On the weekend, Johnson went 10-for-15 at the plate totaling 13 RBI, four home runs and seven runs scored.

Sacramento State got on the board first in the top of the second. After taking the first pitch for a ball, Chris Lewis hit a solo homer to left field to lead off the inning.

Aggie Baseball Takes Game Two Against Sacramento State 6-4 To Clinch Series Win, Looks For Sweep On Sunday

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Junior Daniel Johnson’s four hit, four RBI day helped the Aggies to a 6-4 win over Sacramento State, clinching the series. Johnson’s four-for-five performance at the plate included a two-run home run and two doubles, finishing just a triple shy of the cycle.

Sacramento State jumped on the board first in the top of the first inning. A leadoff single to left centerfield later would score on a single through the right side of the infield, putting the Hornets up 1-0.

The Aggies fought back and took the lead in the bottom of the third, as Brent Sakurai led off with a double to right field. On the next pitch, Daniel Johnson launched a no-doubter over the right field wall scoring two runs. Greg Popylisen followed it up with a double down the left field line. Aggie Baseball Routs Sacramento State 14-4 To Open Series

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Two three-run blasts and a solo shot helped the Aggies to a 14-4 win over Sacramento State in eight innings on Friday. This was the most runs NM State has scored in a game since scoring 17 runs against Chicago State on March 24. Junior Mason Fishback’s five-RBI night now makes him the fifth different Aggie to rack up five RBI in a game this season, joining Daniel Johnson, L.J. Hatch, Trey Stine and Joseph Koerper.

Junior Marcel Renteria came out of the gate red hot, as he struck the first Hornet batter out on three pitches. He then proceeded to get a fly out and a four pitch strikeout to retire the side.

Aggie Baseball Drops Series Finale At Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, CA - New Mexico State dropped the series finale to CSU Bakersfield 8-2 on Sunday.

The Roadrunners got on the board in the second, leading off the inning with a single up the middle. A full count walk put runners on first and second. The first run scored on an E5. The second run scored on a single to first, putting CSUB up 2-0 after two innings.

The 'Runners scored again in the third, leading off with a full count walk. A double down the right field line scored the first run of the inning. Another run scored on an E9 during the same play. The third run scored on a sacrifice fly to right center, putting CSUB up 5-0.

CSUB added two more runs in the fifth. Both runs scored on a triple to right, putting the score at 7-0.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggie Baseball Take Game Two Against Bakersfield, 5-4

BAKERSFIELD, CA - Junior Dan Hetzel’s three-run home run in the third inning helped the Aggies defeat CSU Bakersfield 5-4 on Saturday. Hetzel, a native of Long Island, N.Y., now leads the WAC with 36 RBI.

CSUB got on the board in the first with a single up the middle to lead off the inning. A 5-4 fielder’s choice erased that runner. A single to left would score a run, putting the ‘Runners up 1-0.

The Aggies took the lead in the third as Brent Sakurai reached on an E5 to start the inning. Austin Botello singled up the middle, putting runners on first and second with two outs. After taking two pitches for balls, Dan Hetzel unloaded a pitch, sending it soaring over 400 feet over the center wall. The homer put NM State up 3-1.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggies Fall To Bakersfield 7-6 In WAC Series Opener

BAKERSFIELD, CA New Mexico State came up just short on Friday as they fell to CSU Bakersfield. The Aggies’ bullpen pitched well enough to get the win, as Chris Butcher, Ruger Rodriguez and Joe Galindo combined to only allow one hit and strike out six ‘Runners in five innings. Rodriguez, a native of Los Chaves, N.M., punched out four CSUB batters, setting a new career high.
