Aggie Softball Tops BYU 2-1 In Extra Innings

CATHEDRAL CITY, CA - Fiana Finau drove in Rachel Rodriguez with a walk-off single to give the NM State softball team a 2-1, eight inning victory over BYU on Thursday at the Big League Dreams Softball Park. This was the first win over BYU in more than 40 years for the Aggies.

NM State (10-2) garnered two runs and two RBIs on four hits. Karysta Donisthorpe amassed nine strikeouts in an eight inning complete game. The senior allowed just three hits and one run in 30 batters faced. Donisthorpe now holds a 5-1 record.

BYU's (7-3) McKenna Bull pitched 7.1 innings and allowed four hits and two runs with one error. She also racked up seven walks in 31 batters faced.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggie Softball Wins A Pair On Final Day Of Troy Cox Classic

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The NM State softball team defeated both Creighton and Western Michigan to close out the Troy Cox Classic on Sunday at the NM State Softball Complex. The Aggies topped Creighton 9-0 and beat Western Michigan 8-0.

Game One

The Aggies (9-2) had nine runs and eight RBIs on 13 hits against Creighton. Rachel Rodriguez and Fiana Finau scored two runs each. Emma Adams racked up a game-high three hits and four RBI, which included a bases-loaded home run. In 5.0 innings pitched, Karysta Donisthorpe had two strikeouts and allowed just one hit.

Creighton’s (4-6) Sydnee Eck pitched 2.0 innings and allowed eight runs on 11 hits as she faced 19 batters.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggie Softball Splits On Day Two Of Troy Cox Classic

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - After falling 8-0 to No. 14 Oklahoma, the NM State softball team found its stride offensively and defeated Campbell 10-1 on Saturday evening at the NM State Softball Complex on day two of the Troy Cox Classic.

Game One

NM State racked up four hits against the Sooners. Makayla McAdams, after allowing three runs in the second inning, prevented Oklahoma from scoring for three-straight innings. She threw two strikeouts and faced 28 batters. Oklahoma's Paige Parker pitched 6.0 innings and allowed four hits and one walk.

The Aggies held the Sooners scoreless in the first inning for the second game in a row as the visiting team was retired in order. The Aggies put two on base in the bottom of the inning, but both were left stranded to leave the game at 0-0 heading into the second inning.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggie Softball Splits On Day One Of Troy Cox Classic

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - After dropping an 11-1 decision to No. 14 Oklahoma and falling behind 5-0 against Western Michigan, Fiana Finau racked up six RBIs as the NM State softball team scored 11 runs in the bottom of the sixth to defeat the Broncos 15-5 on Friday night.

Game One

The Aggies had one run and one RBI on four hits, while Oklahoma racked up 11 runs and 11 RBI on 11 hits. Karysta Donisthorpe pitched 3.2 innings and had one strikeout while allowing three earned runs, her first allowed of the season. Paige Parker, the 2015 NFCA Freshman of the Year, pitched 5.0 innings and gave up four hits and one run.

NM State held the Sooners scoreless through three batters in the top of the first inning. Rachel Rodriguez hit a base single in the bottom of the inning, but was left stranded as the game remained 0-0 heading into the second.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggie Softball Defeats UTEP, Incarnate Word To Improve To 4-0

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Fiana Finau hit a three-run home run to end the game against Incarnate Word to help the NM State softball team to a 13-3 victory against the Cardinals as the Aggies went 2-0 on the day. The Aggies began the day with a 4-1 victory over Battle of I-10 rival UTEP.

Game One

The Aggies (4-0) amassed nine hits and four RBIs against UTEP (2-2). Rachel Rodriguez, Kelsey Horton and Brenna Nakamura each racked up two hits. Karysta Donisthorpe threw six strikeouts in 19 batters faced through four innings. Aggie Softball Sweeps Doubleheader With Incarnate Word To Open 2016 Season

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Freshman Kelsey Horton hit three home runs in her first four at-bats as the NM State softball team swept a double header against Incarnate Word on Friday at the NM State SB Complex. The Aggies defeated the Cardinals 11-1 in the first game and 8-0 in game two.

Game One

Overall, the Aggies (1-0) racked up 15 hits and nine RBI, while Incarnate Word (1-2) had four hits and one RBI. Pitcher Karysta Donisthorpe captured her first win of the season as she amassed five strikeouts in 10 batters faced.

NM State jumped out to an early lead as Rachel Rodriguez scored off an Emma Adams double. With bases loaded, Horton then hit a grand slam in her first at-bat as an Aggie, followed by a home run from Tatum Reedy. Aggie Softball Ends Season With 2-0 Loss To Minnesota In NCAA Regional

TUCSON, AZ - The New Mexico State softball team defeated St. John’s (NY), 9-6, on Saturday at Hillenbrand Stadium, but later in the day lost for the second time in as many days to No. 11/15 Minnesota, 2-0, as the 2015 edition of Aggie softball was eliminated from the Tucson Regional and thus concluded the season.

The Aggies complete the greatest statistical season in program history. NM State broke softball school records in wins (47), winning percentage (.746), runs (465), hits (589), which it did on Saturday, home runs (103), doubles (100), RBIs (436), total bases (1,020), walks (283), team batting average (.348), slugging percentage (.602) and on-base percentage (.445).

The Aggies won the Western Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament titles for only the second time in 10 years in the conference to advance to the NCAA Regional round for the second time in program history.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggie Softball Drops Opening Game At NCAA Regional

TUCSON, AZ - The New Mexico State softball team began play at the NCAA Championship Tucson Regional by losing to top-20 Minnesota 10-2 in six innings on Friday at Hillenbrand Stadium.

It is the second time this season the Aggies (46-15) have fallen at the hands of the Golden Gophers (47-9) and their superstar pitcher Sara Groenewegen.

The lone highlight of the day for NM State was a two-run home run by senior Staci Rodriguez in the top half of the first. Unfortunately, the long ball was one of only three hits mustered by the Aggies versus Groenewegen. Rodriguez, sister Rachel Rodriguez and shortstop Haley Nakamura, who was celebrating her 20th birthday, all went 1-for-2 on the day for NM State’s only hits.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggie Softball Claims 2015 WAC Tournament Title

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The New Mexico State softball team took two games from Bakersfield on Saturday, 7-4 and 18-10 in six innings, to add the 2015 Western Athletic Conference Tournament title to its WAC regular-season championship.

After losing to the ‘Runners (21-25) on Friday, the Aggies (45-14) had to win three-straight games to take their second WAC Tournament crown in program history. NM State easily handled Utah Valley 18-3 in five innings during Friday’s nightcap to reach the championship series on Saturday where they came from behind in game one to stave off elimination before winning a barnburner in the final game of the tournament.

The Aggies now automatically qualify for the NCAA Tournament next week, their second appearance to the NCAA Regionals.  Continue Reading This Post >>
