NMSU Softball Sweeps Doubleheader With UTEP

EL PASO, TX - New Mexico State softball defeated I-10 rival UTEP in El Paso, Texas, on Tuesday. The Aggies defeated the Miners 8-4 and 13-4 in doubleheader action.

NM State moves to 12-16 this season while UTEP falls to 8-23.

Game One

The Aggies got off to a hot start, taking a 2-0 lead in the first. Haley Nakamura reached on a throwing error to lead off the inning. Two-straight walks loaded the bases as Nikki Butler came to the plate. Butler singled to score the first run of the game. A walk to Kennedy Johnson with the bases loaded scored the second run of the inning to give NM State the 2-0 advantage.

NM State added to its lead with a run in the second. With Amy Bergeson on second, Nakamura dropped a bunt to advance the runner. An error by UTEP on the play brought Bergeson home for the 3-0 lead.  Continue Reading This Post >>

NMSU Softball Run Rules Omaha 14-6 In Six Innings

OMAHA, NE - New Mexico State softball defeated Omaha 14-6 in six innings on Tuesday. The Aggies hit three home runs in the game, two by Kaitlyn Rubio and one by Nikki Butler.

How it happened

The Aggies got off to a hot start in the first. Singles by Rachel Rodriguez and Caity Szczesny started the inning as Kelsey Horton came to the plate. The sophomore drove Rodriguez home to give NM State the 1-0 advantage. Fahren Glackin followed with single of her own to score the second run of the inning. Kaitlyn Rubio brought home the third run of the inning to give the Aggies the early 3-0 lead.

Omaha put up a run in the bottom of the second to cut into New Mexico State's lead, but the Aggies followed by putting up two runs in the third. With runners on second and third, Glackin hit a single to drive in two and give New Mexico State the 5-1 lead.  Continue Reading This Post >>

NMSU Softball Downs DePaul 4-1 In UNLV Rebel Classic Opener

LAS VEGAS, NV - New Mexico State defeated DePaul 4-1 on Thursday to open the UNLV Rebel Classic. It was the second time the Aggies defeated the Blue Demons this season.

Kayla Green pitched her second complete game in victory. She struck out five batters and allowed only one hit and one run. NM State moves to 5-10 this season with Green earning her third win.

How it happened

The Aggies opened the game scoring two runs in the first. Rachel Rodriguez hit a single through the left side to start the inning. Kelsey Horton reached base for her 15-straight game as sophomore hit a double to center field. Fahren Glackin drove in the first run of the inning with a single to left field.

With two outs in the first, Haley Nakamura singled through the left side to score a run and give the Aggies the 2-0 advantage.  Continue Reading This Post >>

NMSU Softball Falls To UTEP 5-3

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The New Mexico State softball team fell 5-3 at home to I-10 rival UTEP on Wednesday. Kennedy Johnson and Victoria Castro each had a home run in the loss.

After three scoreless innings, UTEP took a 1-0 lead in the fourth. The Miners added two runs in the fifth and a pair in the sixth to jump out to a 5-0 lead over the Aggies.

In the bottom of the sixth, Johnson hit her second home run of the season to cut into the UTEP lead. Fahren Glackin doubled to keep the rally alive before Castro came to the plate. Castro hit her first homer of the season to score two runs.

The rally came up short, however, as the Aggies fell 5-3. Kayla Green started in the circle for New Mexico State. She pitched 5.2 innings and gave up three runs. Kelsey Horton was unable to keep her 13-game hitting streak alive in the loss. NM State moves to 4-10 with the loss.  Continue Reading This Post >>

NMSU Softball Falls To Oklahoma State 7-4

CATHEDRAL CITY, CA - The New Mexico State softball team dropped their seventh-straight game on Saturday as the Aggies fell to Oklahoma State 7-4.

NM State got on the board first in the second inning. With Destiny Blueford and Fahren Glackin on base, Victoria Castro hit into a fielder's choice, driving in Blueford for the first run of the game.

The Cowgirls came back in the third inning to take the 3-1 lead.

The Aggies battled back in the bottom of the third. With Amy Bergeson reaching on a walk, Kelsey Horton hit a single to put runners on first and third. An infield fly by Merina Ili advanced the both runners into scoring position. OSU threw a wild pitch to bring in Bergeson to cut Oklahoma State's lead in half.

NM State ran into trouble again in the fifth as OSU drove in a run to give the Cowgirls the 4-2 lead.  Continue Reading This Post >>

NMSU Softball Unable To Hold Off No. 14 Michigan

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The New Mexico State softball team played No. 14 Michigan close but came up short as the Aggies fell 5-4 on Friday.

NM State came out hot against the Wolverines to start the game. Rachel Rodriguez hit a leadoff single for the Aggies. After she stole second, Rodriguez was driven home by Kelsey Horton to give NM State the 1-0 advantage.

Michigan took the 2-1 lead in the third inning but the Aggies fought back. In the top of the fourth, NM State was able to load the bases with no outs in the inning, With Merina Ili at the plate, Michigan's pitcher hit the Aggies' designated player to score a run NM State. The Wolverines walked in two more batters to give New Mexico State the 4-2 advantage.

A three-run homer in the sixth inning spoiled the Aggies upset bid as the Wolverines took the 5-4 lead. NM State was unable to rally in the seventh and fell 5-4 to the ranked Wolverines.  Continue Reading This Post >>

NMSU Softball Falls To No. 15 Tennessee

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - New Mexico State softball fell to No. 15 Tennessee on Monday as the Vols defeated the Aggies 9-0 in five innings.

Kayla Green took the circle for the Aggies. The sophomore came into the game 2-2 for the year. Green fell behind early giving up three runs in the first inning.

NM State looked to tie the game in the bottom of the first. Rachel Rodriguez started the game with a single through the left side. Kelsey Horton doubled to left field to advance Rodriguez to third. With runners on second and third, the Aggies were unable to drive in a run, stranding both runners to end the inning.

Tennessee tacked on another run in the second and five in the third to give the Vols the 9-0 advantage.

Rodriguez was again able to reach third base in the third inning. NM State was unable to get the offense going as the Aggies stranded Rodriguez for the second time.  Continue Reading This Post >>

NMSU Softball Splits A Pair Of Games On Friday At Troy Cox Classic

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - New Mexico State softball went 1-1 on Friday as the Aggies defeated DePaul 8-1 but fell to Bradley 5-3.

Game One

The Aggies came out hot against DePaul to start the day. Rachel Rodriguez singled to get the offense going in the first inning. Fahren Glackin put the first run on the board as she sent a double out to center field. The junior was driven in by a Merina Ili double to give the Aggies the 2-0 advantage to start the game.

NM State tacked on another run in the second as Kaitlyn Rubio hit a home run to left field in her first collegiate start. It was the freshman's first home run of the year.

DePaul chipped away at the Aggies lead as the Blue Demons hit a home run of their own in the fourth inning. NM State fired back scoring a run in the bottom of the fourth to give the Aggies the 4-1 lead.  Continue Reading This Post >>

NMSU Softball Opens Troy Cox Classic With 10-2 Run-Rule Victory Over Northern Colorado

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The Aggies opened the Troy Cox Classic with a win as New Mexico State defeated Northern Colorado 10-2 in six innings on Thursday.

Kayla Green was back in the circle for the NM State after going 1-1 against UTSA. The sophomore had a rocky start as she gave up a two-run homerun in the first inning.

New Mexico State chipped away at the lead, starting in the third inning. After Rachel Rodriguez reached first base on a walk, Kelsey Horton sent a ball out to left field. Rodriguez scored on the play to cut the Bears lead in half. In the next at-bat, Fahren Glackin hit a double to left field to drive in Horton and tie the game.

In the fourth, Amy Bergeson started the inning with a single to left field. Merina Ili scored Bergeson on a booming double to give New Mexico State the lead. Ili also scored in the inning to give NM State the 4-2 advantage.  Continue Reading This Post >>

NMSU Softball Falls To UTSA In Series Finale

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - New Mexico State came up short as they fell to UTSA 11-3 on Sunday. Kelsey Horton hit her second home run of the season in the loss

Sophomore Kayla Green started on the mound for the New Mexico State after earning a win in her first appearance this season. She found herself in trouble early as UTSA jumped ahead 3-0 in the first inning.

The Roadrunners bats stayed hot and the Aggies found themselves trailing 5-0 entering the bottom of the third. Horton cut into UTSA's lead as she hit a solo home run to center field.

New Mexico State cut into the Roadrunners lead once more in the bottom of the fifth. Amy Bergeson got the offense going as she singled to get on base. Horton sent Bergeson home after hitting a double down the left field line to score the lone run of the inning.

The Roadrunners were hot once again in the seventh inning, scoring six runs to pull ahead 11-2.  Continue Reading This Post >>
