Forty Nine Aggies Earn 2011 Fall Academic All-WAC Honors

DENVER, CO - Forty-nine student-athletes represented New Mexico State University when the Western Athletic Conference released the 2011 fall sports Academic All-WAC Team, Tuesday, Jan. 17.

The five sports represented were Men's and Women's Cross Country, Football, Soccer and Volleyball. Men’s and Women’s Cross Country received the most honors with 11 each, Football and Soccer tallied 10 apiece and Volleyball had seven student-athletes honored.

This list included the likes of All-American honorable mention Jennah DeVries, all-WAC selection Courtney Schultz and Academic All-American David Niumatalolo.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must have completed at least one academic year, have at least a 3.00 cumulative grade point average and have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's contests. The following is a list of the fall sport honorees:  Continue Reading This Post >>

Jack Nixon Named New Mexico Sportscaster Of The Year

SALISBURY, NC - New Mexico State’s Jack Nixon, the ‘Voice of the Aggies’ has been named the New Mexico Sportscaster of the Year, announced Monday by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association. Nixon, receives this award for the second time in his career, the first was back in 1980.

"It's an honor to be recognized by your peers," Nixon said. "I feel blessed to have this job for so many years in a great town like Las Cruces."

Nixon, a native of Omaha, Neb., has been in the booth at Aggie football games and on the sidelines of Aggie men’s basketball games since 1976, bringing Aggie fans the play-by-play action. This coming Saturday, Jan. 14, when the men’s basketball team takes on Idaho in the Pan American Center at 7 p.m., Nixon will call his 1,000 men’s basketball game as the ‘Voice of the Aggies.’

Aggie Football Hires David Elson As Defensive Coordinator

The Bowling Green Daily News has reported that former Western Kentucky head coach and current Franklin-Simpson High School defensive coordinator David Elson has been hired as New Mexico State University's next defensive coordinator. According to the story Elson helped lead the FSHS football team to a class 4-A state title and was hired last week by New Mexico State and has been on the recruiting trail.

Elson coached Western Kentucky football program for seven seasons, finishing 39-42. He led WKU to NCAA FCS (Division I-AA) playoff appearances in 2003 and 2004 but was fired in the midst of the 2009 season. WKU eventually finished the season 0-12.

Elson takes over for departed defensive coordinator Dale Lindsey. The Aggies finished the season with a 4-9 record and 2-5 in WAC play but ranked 112th in points allowed per game allowing 37.8 per contest.

Walker Hires Bedell As Offensive Line Coach

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - New Mexico State Head Football Coach DeWayne Walker announced Thursday that Brad Bedell has been hired as the Aggies' new offensive line coach. Bedell spent one season at UC Davis.

"I've known Brad since he was a high school player and as he worked his way through the junior college ranks and then at Colorado," Walker said. "When he got into coaching I just continued to follow his coaching career. Tom Cable recommended Brad to me and Tom and I have a great relationship. Brad is an up-and-comer and I think with the type of work that Jason (Lenzmeier) did for us, Brad can come in and continue to build on that and even take it further. Martin Takes Offense Coordinator Position At Boston College

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - New Mexico State Head Football Coach DeWayne Walker announced Thursday that offensive coordinator Doug Martin has accepted the offensive coordinator job at Boston College.

"This is a great opportunity for Doug (Martin)," Walker said. "When other schools come and recruit our coaches I see it as a positive step because this means we have hired good coaches and good people here at NM State. I wish Coach Martin the best in the future."

Martin guided the Aggie offense in 2011, as NM State averaged 398.1 yards of offense a game, which ranked 46th in the nation and 25th in the nation in passing offense.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Eight Players Named To Phil Steele's All-WAC Team; Taveon Rogers Named Second Team All-American;

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - One of the nation’s most informative football magazines, Phil Steele’s College Football has announced its post season All-WAC teams and All-American teams. Eight NM State football players were named to the All-WAC team and one was named to the All-American team.

Taveon Rogers was named a second team wide receiver and first team kick returner on the All-WAC team, while being named a second team All-American kick returner. This is Roger’s fifth All-America honor this post season.

Defensive back Jonte Green and safety Donyae Coleman earned first team All-WAC picks, while running back Kenny Turner and defensive end David Niumatalolo were selected to the second team. Center Mike Grady, tackle Davonte Wallace and defensive tackle David Mahoney all made third team All-WAC.

Rogers Racks Up Fourth All-American Honor

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - New Mexico State’s senior kick returner Taveon Rogers was named an All-American by College Sports Madness.com as a kick returner on the third team. Rogers has now been selected to four All-America teams this post season, the most by any football player in school history.

Rogers (Lancaster, Calif.) was the team's leading kick returner with 1,318 yards and three touchdowns. He leaves NM State as the all-time leader in kick returns for a career (103), kick return yardage (2,728) and most kick returns for a touchdown (3). He also led the nation in all-purpose yards per game with 196.3, which leads the league. Rogers led the Aggies in receiving in 2011 with 59 catches for 1,048 yards and nine touchdowns, averaging 17.8 yards a catch and 87.3 yards a game. Against Fresno State, Rogers recorded a school record 412 all-purpose yards.

Taveon Rogers Earns Third All-American Honor

Aggie kickoff return specialist Taveon Rogers garnered his third All-American honor of the year earning Honorable Mention by Sports Illustrated for their 2011 All-America teams on Tuesday.

Rogers' third All-American honor is the most in any season for any Aggie player and is the fourth Aggie to earn Honorable Mention from Sports Illustrated. His three All-America honors are also the most for any Aggie player in New Mexico State history.

Taveon Rogers Earns Second All-American Honor

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Senior kick returner Taveon Rogers earned his second All-America honor as announced by Pro Football Weekly, Monday.

Rogers becomes just the second football player in school history to earn multiple All-America awards in a career. Chris Williams did so in 2006 and 2008 as he was named an honorable mention selection by SI.com and a fourth team member by Phil Steele.

PFW’s All-America team annually honors the most talented players in college football and is selected based on considerable feedback from NFL evaluators taking into consideration a player’s pure talent and contribution to his team. Unlike many other teams rewarding the best college football players, PFW places an extra premium on true talent and draft value in the selection process.
