LAS CRUCES, N.M. - New Mexico State head football coach DeWayne Walker announced Wednesday that offensive mastermind Doug Martin has been named the Aggies’ new offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach.

“This of all coach Martin wants to be here in Las Cruces and he wants to be an Aggie,” Walker said. “Being at Kent State and before that at Eastern Carolina, he understands what it takes to build a program. I spent a lot of time talking to him about that very thing. I think he is a leader the players can believe in and buy into his offensive system. After going through the interview process, I feel that Coach Martin is a guy that can come in here and help us get the job done.”

“I’m really excited for the opportunity to come coach at New Mexico State and at a school that is a member of the WAC, a conference that is known for throwing the ball,” Martin said. “When I look at New Mexico State football and some of the things they’ve done over the past several years with facilities and the hiring of Coach Walker, it was perfect fit for me.”

“We obviously have to throw the ball much better than we have the last couple of years and we are going to work very hard on our intermediate and three-step passing games,” Martin said. “I think fans will enjoy the diversity of the offense and the explosive capabilities in the passing game.”  Continue Reading This Post >>

The Record Publishing is reporting that New Mexico State will hire former Kent State head coach Doug Martin as its next offensive coordinator.

Abram Elam, former Kent State and current Cleveland Brown safety first tweeted Sunday afternoon that his former head coach Doug Martin is headed to New Mexico State as the new offensive coordinator and earlier this afternoon Ryan Lewis, beat writer for KentSportsReport.com also tweeted that Martin had accepted the position.

There has been no official announcement from New Mexico State regarding the hiring but in any event it appears that the Aggies are closing in on filling the position.

Martin resigned as head coach at Kent State after the final game last season collecting a 28-53 record in seven seasons but is and is credited with helping improve the talent level and raise expectations around the Kent State football program.

Martin brought in several players to Kent State who went on to play in the NFL, most notably, Josh Cribbs who is currently with the Cleveland Browns. Cribbs finished his career at Kent State as teh school's all-time leader in offensive yards (10,839). Other school records include rushing touchdowns (38), pass completions (616), pass attempts (1,123), passing yardage (7,169), touchdowns scored (41), and points scored (246).

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - New Mexico State head football coach DeWayne Walker announced Friday morning that offensive coordinator and quarterback coach Mike Dunbar has retired after over 25 years in coaching.

"Obviously we are disappointed that coach Dunbar has retired," Walker said. "We wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors. I will begin an immediate search for a new offensive coordinator."

In his first and only season as the Aggies’ play caller, Dunbar guided the NM State offense to average 296.5 yards per game. The Aggies scored 17 total touchdowns on the season, as quarterback Matt Christian led the Aggies with 1,372 yards passing, completing 48 percent of his passes. Dunbar also guided freshman Andrew Manley, who threw for 604 yards and a touchdown, completing 52 percent of his passes. LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State Athletics Department and Aggie football team announced today that a ‘Football Success Fund’ has been established to help create a source of funds that will address key needs for football, including academic support and summer school scholarships, training table and nutrition, recruiting top talent and retaining assistant coaches.

Mickey Clute, NM State graduate of 1968 and Hank Cook, NM State graduate of 1976 started the Football Success Fund early last year. The vision driving this fund is to make football competitive in the Western Athletic Conference. Membership in the fund is $5,000 per person and to date, 22 people have committed to join the effort.

According to the Football Success Fund Chair, Mike Cheney, NM State graduate of 1985, “A key focus of this fund is to ensure the dollars are utilized for the designated purposes and to enhance the current football budget.”  Continue Reading This Post >>

DENVER, CO - The 2010-11 Academic All-WAC men’s and women’s cross country, football, soccer and volleyball teams were announced for fall. A total of 330 WAC student-athletes were named to the list for the fall including 42 student-athletes from New Mexico State. To be eligible, a student-athlete must have completed at least one academic year, have at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average and have participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s contests. LAS CRUCES, N.M. - New Mexico State head football coach DeWayne Walker announced the Aggies’ 2011 signing class Wednesday afternoon. Nineteen student-athletes signed a National Letter of Intent with the Aggies to attend New Mexico State University and play football beginning in 2011.

The Aggies’ 2011 signing class is full of junior college transfers and high school student-athletes. The defensive line and offensive line were a focus for Walker’s third signing class as head coach. The Aggies signed two defensive linemen and five offensive linemen. Also signing with NM State were one linebacker, three wide receivers, one quarterback, four defensive backs, two running backs and one tight end to round out the signing class.

“As it turns out we were a little offensive heavy at the wide receiver and offensive lineman positions and we took more running backs then expected but in our conference we have to score points so we had to take more play makers on the offensive side of the ball,” Walker said. “Defensively, we tried to use a little more strategy to find guys to blend in to bump up the number of players we have with game experience. We may take a defensive lineman and a linebacker after signing day. I feel like we did a good job of meeting our needs in this signing class.”

The Aggies signed a mixture of athletes, including nine junior college signees and 10 high school players. NM State will also welcome gray shirts Adam Shapiro, Daniel English and Jackson KaKa who signed in 2010 but will be with the team this spring. LAS CRUCES, N.M. - New Mexico State freshman offensive tackle Davonte Wallace has been named to the Phil Steele’s 2010 All-Freshman Team, announced late Tuesday afternoon.

Wallace, a native of El Paso, Texas, played tackle as a true freshman for the Aggies in 2010, starting 11 of the 12 games. Wallace helped the Aggies rush for 1,526 yards and eight touchdowns, while the NM State passing game threw for 2,009 yards and nine touchdowns. On the season, Wallace collected 27 knockdowns, recording five knockdowns against New Mexico (Oct. 9), Idaho (Oct. 23) and Nevada (Nov. 20). Wallace allowed just two sacks on the season and committed just two penalties.

Wallace has also been nominated for Freshman All-American honors that will be announced in early January.

New Mexico State senior cornerback Davon House and junior WR/KR Taveon Rogers were named to the 2010 All-WAC Football teams as voted on by the league's nine coaches. House followed up his First Team All-WAC preseason selection by being named to the WAC's First Team for the 2010 season. House finished the season with two interceptions including one returned for a touchdown against Hawai'i on Senior Day. House played in and started all 12 games this season and finished with 57 tackles including 29 solo tackles. He 10 pass preak ups and 12 passes defended and forced one fumble.

Rogers electrified the Aggie kick return game setting the NCAA single season record with 1,410 kickoff return yards. The record would stand for one week before being broken by Utah State's Kerwynn Williams. Rogers' 1,410 yards shatters the NM State single-season kickoff return record of 778 yards let in 2009 by Tonny Glynn. Rogers set the Aggie single-game kickoff return yardage record against Kansas on September 25th with 219 yards on six returns.

Rogers also became a valuable part of the Aggie offense recording 18 catches for 278 yards and two touchdown catches. Rogers led the team with 1,742 all-purpose yards and averaged 145.2 all-purpose yards per game.  Continue Reading This Post >>
