LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The New Mexico State men’s basketball team is set to play in the 2011 Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout this November. University of Alaska Anchorage officials announced the tournament field Wednesday.

Along with host Alaska Anchorage, men’s teams from UC Irvine, Central Michigan, Dartmouth, Murray State, New Mexico State, San Francisco and Southern Mississippi will appear at Sullivan Arena for the 34th annual college basketball tournament.

First-round matchups have been set for the men’s tournament, commencing with Southern Miss-Alaska Anchorage and Murray State-UC Irvine, Nov. 23, followed by San Francisco-Central Michigan and New Mexico State-Dartmouth, Nov. 24. Tip-off times will be announced later.  Continue Reading This Post >>

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - New Mexico State men’s basketball junior forward Troy Gillenwater has decided to remain in the NBA draft. He led the Aggies in both scoring and rebounding with 18.9 points and 6.3 rebounds per game in 2010-11.

“After thinking long and hard about Troy’s situation, we feel it is in his best interest to remain in the NBA draft,” head coach Marvin Menzies said. “Troy’s decision was a tough one for him. LAS CRUCES, N.M. - New Mexico State junior Hernst Laroche not only leads the Aggie men’s basketball team on the court but also in the classroom. The steady point guard from Montreal needed only three years to graduate.

Laroche earned a bachelor’s degree in government and will join his fellow graduates in NM State’s afternoon commencement ceremonies at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 7, at the Pan American Center. He is the first one in his family to graduate from an American university. Next season, Laroche plans to take business courses to fulfill pre-requisites for NM State’s MBA program.

“I’m very excited,” he said. “I think it’s an honor and something great that I’ve accomplished in my life.”

Laroche tackled his academics with the same tenacity he takes onto the basketball court, which allowed him to earn a degree in just three years.  Continue Reading This Post >>

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - New Mexico State men’s basketball head coach Marvin Menzies has signed Eric Weary Jr. to a National Letter of Intent. Weary is a 6-5 guard from New Orleans, La.

“Eric is the first recruit to sign in the period, and we’re very happy to get his signature after his official visit went really well,” Menzies said. “We felt like it was a perfect fit for both sides. Eric led New Orleans in scoring, and he has a knack from putting the ball in the basket, and that’s always something to look for in a recruit. “After several lengthy and in-depth conversations between Troy and myself, we have reached the decision to enter Troy’s name into the 2011 NBA draft at this time without signing with an agent,” head coach Marvin Menzies said. “We will assess the situation as it unfolds in the way of interest and opportunity and make a final decision when the time is right regarding his future.
