Aggie Women's Basketball Selected To Play In WNIT

The New Mexico State Aggie women's basketball team's season will continue as the team has been selected to play in the WNIT. The Aggies will face Arizona State on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in the Walls Fargo Arena in Tempe, Ariz.

Arizona State finished 9-9 in Pac 10 play and are 17-13 overall while the Aggies finished 8-8 in WAC play and are 18-13 overall. This is just New Mexico State's fourth postseason appearance in the program's 35 year history as the Aggies made back-to-back trips to the NCAA Tournament in the 1986-1987 and 1987-1988 seasons and last appeared in the postseason in the 1993-1994 season when they were in the WNIT. The Sun Devils are making their 10th consecutive postseason appearance under head coach Charli Turner-Thorne and prior to this season had appeared in the NCAA Tournament four consecutive seasons reaching the Elite Eight in the 2007 and 2009 NCAA Tournaments.

Tickets go on sale to the general public at 1 p.m. on Tuesday. General public tickets can be purchased in person or by calling the Sun Devil Ticket Office at 480-727-0000. Crystal Boyd Earns Second Team All-WAC, Camila Rosen Earns Freshman All-WAC Honors

DENVER, CO - The 2009-10 All-Western Athletic Conference teams have been named, following a vote of the WAC’s head coaches. Louisiana Tech’s Shanavia Dowdell headlines the awards, earning the WAC Player of the Year honor for the second year in a row.

Dowdell, a 6-1 senior forward from Calera, Ala. (Calera HS), becomes the fifth player in WAC history to earn the award in back-to-back seasons. She led the WAC in scoring (17.9) and rebounding (12.4), and ranked second in field goal percentage (.520) and fifth in blocks (1.29). She also tallied a WAC-best 20 double-doubles, including 14 of 16 conference games, and was named WAC Player of the Week four times.   Continue Reading This Post >>

Seeds Set For Aggie Basketball Teams

The New Mexico State men's basketball team fell 81-63 to Utah State and that loss combined with Nevada's victory over Louisiana Tech dropped the Aggies to the 3-seed in the upcoming WAC tournament in Reno. The Aggies finished 11-5 in WAC play this season while the Spartans finished 6-10. The Aggies will face 6-seed San Jose State on Thursday, March 11th at 9:30 p.m. MT. The Aggies and Spartans split the regular season series with each team winning on their own court. The Spartans defeated NM State 93-84 in San Jose on January 23 while the Aggies returned the favor beating San Jose State 94-82 on February 6. Jasmine Lowe Earns WAC Player Of The Week Honors

DENVER, CO - New Mexico State junior guard Jasmine Lowe has been named the Verizon Wireless Western Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the week of Jan. 4-10. This is the first WAC Player of the Week honor ever for Lowe.

Lowe, a San Francisco native, averaged 21.5 points on 57 percent shooting, 5.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 3.5 steals as the Aggies opened WAC play 2-0. She scored a game-high 26 points in NM State’s first-ever win at Boise State, including 12 of the team’s final 27 points. She followed it up with a game-high 17 points, a career-high-tying six rebounds, four assists and three steals in a win over Hawai’i. The Aggies have now won six straight, their longest win streak since the 1993-94 season.

Sanchez Galaz, Egan Noble and Cuellar To Be Inducted Into First Community Bank/NM State Athletics Hall of Fame

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The New Mexico State Athletics Department together with First Community Bank announced Monday, January 4, that former women’s basketball standout Mari Sanchez Galaz, women’s golfer Jane Egan Noble and track & field/cross country great Rachael Cuellar will be inducted into the First Community Bank/NM State Athletics Hall of Fame.

The ceremony is set to take place at halftime of the men's basketball game, Saturday, February 27 against Boise State in Las Cruces. The NMSU Hall of Fame, which is located in the Pan American Center, honors outstanding student-athletes, coaches, teams and benefactors from Aggie past.

When Aggie fans hear the name Mari Sanchez, images of a prolific shooter from behind the three-point arc come to mind. Now married to Las Cruces native Adrian Galaz, Sanchez Galaz is just as accomplished off the court as she was on the hardwood.  Continue Reading This Post >>

NM State Women's Basketball Signs Two Top Recruits

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - New Mexico State head women's basketball coach Darin Spence announced Friday, that guard/forward Jasmine Rutledge and guard Andrea Chenier have both signed National Letters of Intent to play basketball for NM State beginning in the 2010-11 academic year.

Jasmine Rutledge - G/F, 6-0, Manhattan Beach, Calif. (Mira Costa HS)

Rutledge, a native of Manhattan Beach, Calif., played for Mira Costa High School. As a junior, Rutledge was a first team all-Bay League selection, as well as a first team all-South Bay Area honoree. She was also selected as a first team member to play in the Orange County Classic. Rutledge averaged 10 points and game and 13 rebounds a contest as a junior. He tallied three assists and three steals a game as well. She was also recruited by Utah State, Fresno State and Cal State Bakersfield.  Continue Reading This Post >>

NM State Men’s And Women’s Basketball To Be Televised 21 Times In 2009-2010 Season

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - New Mexico State will distribute a combined 17 men’s and women’s basketball games in the 2009-10 basketball season through its AggieVision production group. In addition, four NM State men’s basketball games will be televised nationally on the ESPN family of networks.

Seven women’s basketball games will be part of the AggieVision schedule, including non-conference games against Kansas, UTEP, and UNM. In addition, AggieVision will also produce and distribute four conference games.

"TV coverage for this program is imperative," said Darin Spence, head women’s basketball coach. "We have the best home schedule we have ever had and this TV schedule gives us a great opportunity to showcase the program."  Continue Reading This Post >>

WAC Preseason Polls Released; Men Picked 3rd; Women Picked 5th and 6th

The preseason coaches and media polls for the 2009-2010 WAC basketball season were released today and the men's team under third year head coach Marvin Menzies was picked to finish third by both the coaches and media. The Aggies received six first place votes from the media. Junior guard Jahmar Young was named to the Preseason First Team All-WAC team by both the media and the coaches.

On the women's side the Aggies, under the direction of Darin Spence who enters his seventh season as head coach, the Aggies were picked ot finish sixth by the coaches and sixth by the media. The Aggies placed two players on the preseason All-WAC teams as Madison Spence was picked First Team All-WAC by both the media and the coaches while University of Texas transfer Crystal Boyd was chosen Second Team All-WAC by the media.

The men's team kicks off the season with an exhibition against Western New Mexico on Monday, November 2 and then opens regular season play at St. Mary's on Friday, November 13 while the women's team kicks off the season on the road at Cal State-Northridge on Friday, November 13.  Continue Reading This Post >>
