Neal Named To Naismith Trophy Preseason Watch List

ATLANTA, GA - Senior forward Sherell Neal of the New Mexico State women’s basketball team was named to the 2007-08 Naismith Trophy Preseason Watch List, presented by AT&T, as was announced by the Atlanta Tipoff Club.

Neal, who is the WAC’s active career leading scorer and rebounder with 1,107 points and 809 rebounds, has helped guide the Aggies to an 8-2 start to the season, which is tied for the third best start in program history. She currently ranks in the top 10 in the WAC in scoring, rebounding, field goal percentage, free throw percentage, steals and blocked shots.

In the Aggies' first game of the season Neal scored a season high 19 points to push her over 1,000 career points, becoming the 16th Aggie ever to do so. Her 809 career rebounds has her in seventh place on the Aggies all-time list and she currently ranks second in career blocked shots with 111.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Spence Inks Three Players In Early Signing Period

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - New Mexico State women's basketball head coach Darin Spence announced Wednesday, Nov. 14 that he has signed three players to national letters of intent to attend school and play basketball for the Aggies beginning in the 2008-09 season.

Guard Taylor Altenburg, guard Kaitlyn Soto and forward Tabytha Wampler are all set to come to NMSU after stellar prep and club careers.

Spence is excited by the three additions to his team, as he loses his five seniors following this 2007-08 season.

"All three of the players will be a good fit for us," Spence said. "The three of them are quality, hard-nosed kids that are good athletes and come from good high school programs. They also got great experience from club basketball where the three of them played for some of the better club teams in the country."  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggies Face Western New Mexico In Final Exhibition Tonight

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The New Mexico State women's basketball team hosts Western New Mexico Monday, Nov. 5, in its final exhibition tune-up before opening up the regular season on the road Nov. 9 at UC Irvine.

Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. in the Pan American Center and live stats of the game are available on the web at www.nmstatesports.com.

NMSU defeated New Mexico Highlands Thursday, Nov. 1, 93-57, in its first exhibition game. 12 Aggies scored in the contest and the Aggie defense forced 21 turnovers and held NMSU to just 30.8 percent shooting from the field.

Last season the Aggies defeated the Mustangs, 81-55 in its final preseason exhibition game. WNMU was 8-16 and 8-11 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference a year ago.

After Monday's exhibition, NMSU heads out to Irvine, Calif., to open its 35th season of women's basketball on the road for second consecutive season.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggie Women's Hoops Opens Season Up With First Exhibition Tonight

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The New Mexico State women’s basketball team hosts New Mexico Highlands in its first exhibition game Thursday, Nov. 1, in the Pan American Center. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. (MDT) and live stats are available on the web at www.nmstatesports.com.

NMSU hosts Western New Mexico on Monday, Nov. 5 at the Pan American Center at 7:00 p.m. in its final exhibition tune-up before traveling to Irvine, Calif. for its season-opener against UC Irvine on Nov. 9.

The 2007-08 season marks the 35th season of women’s basketball at New Mexico State and the Aggies were picked to finish in fifth place in the conference in the preseason coaches poll. The media penciled NMSU in the fourth spot in the WAC.

Head coach Darin Spence enters his fifth year with the Aggies where he led NMSU to a 13-18 record and berth in the title game of the WAC Championships a year ago.

The Aggies return four starters from last season and nine lettermen in addition to the seven newcomers that are being thrown into this seasons mix, which is the deepest team Spence has had to work with in his tenure at NMSU.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggie Women’s Basketball Set to Begin Practice for Canada Tour

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State women's basketball team begins its preparation for its exhibition tour in Vancouver, British Columbia on Wednesday, August 23. The Aggies play three games over Labor Day weekend in Canada, beginning on Sept. 1.

NMSU departs Las Cruces on Friday, Aug. 31 for Vancouver. The Aggies face the College of Fraser Valley at 12:00 p.m. and Simon Fraser at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 1.

Then following its two games Saturday, New Mexico State concludes its exhibition tour with a single-game against Trinity Western at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday.

Head coach Darin Spence is excited to get his players back on the hardwood in the first week of school for this rare preseason opportunity.

"Any time you can practice early you have a better chance to evaluate what you have," Spence said. "Being able to see our new kids before the start of the year and have them get some playing experience will help our team our immensely."  Continue Reading This Post >>

Spence Signs Erica Sanchez to Women's Basketball Team

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – New Mexico State women’s basketball head coach Darin Spence announced on Wednesday, Aug. 8 that he has signed Erica Sanchez to a Grant-In-Aid to attend school and play basketball for the Aggies this coming season.

Sanchez is a 6-3 forward from Chula Vista, Calif. and is a recent graduate of Eastlake High School. She was high school teammates with fellow incoming freshman Brittany Palmer and the duo helped guide the Titans to the San Diego section championship game as seniors.

Spence is pleased to have Sanchez join the Aggies this coming season as she will help give NMSU more size and depth inside.

“Erica is a solid player with good size, mobility and has a big upside to her,” Spence said. “She runs well, plays active at both ends and can step out and shoot the ball. She can play either a big wing or a forward spot for us.”  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggie Women's Basketball Announces 2007-08 Schedule

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – New Mexico State women’s head basketball coach Darin Spence announced the release of the 2007-08 schedule on Wednesday, Aug. 1. The schedule is highlighted by the second most home games in school history and the second consecutive season in which New Mexico State hosts the Western Athletic Conference Championships.

NMSU hosts 16 games at the Pan American Center this season. Only in the 1979-80 season has there been more regular season games played at home by an Aggie team; that year they played 17.

With a 68.4 (294-136) home winning percentage in program history, this years heavily weighted home schedule provides the Aggies with an excellent opportunity to have their first winning season since 2002-03 and the chance to make their first postseason appearance since the 1993-94 season.  Continue Reading This Post >>
