Five Aggies Earn All-WAC Volleyball Honors

Aggie Volleyball Signs A Pair From Coppell High (TX)

According to a report in the Coppell High School Sidekick, a pair of volleyball players from the Coppell Cowgirls volleyball team will be headed to Las Cruces, N.M. for the 2010 season. Right side hitter Dierdre Pajares and libero Shelby Tamura both signed National Letters of Intent to play for the Aggies.

Pajares, a 6'0" opposite side hitter has recorded 130 kills this season for the Cowgirls. Tamura, a 5'2" libero has recorded 267 digs for the Cowgirls this season. Both players are part of the Texas Advantage Volleyball club system and Pajares was named to the 2009 AVCA High School Watch List.

Tamura was an All-Tournament selection for the Allen Teas Open and the Jenny Eckert Tournament while both Pajares and Tamura were named to the Lone Star Volleyball All-Texas High School Special Recognition team.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Kayleigh Giddens Named WAC Volleyball Player Of The Week

Kayleigh GiddensDENVER, CO - New Mexico State junior outside hitter Kayleigh Giddens has been named the Verizon Wireless Western Athletic Conference Volleyball Player of the Week for the week of Nov. 2-8. This is the second WAC Player of the Week honor of the season for Giddens.

The Lubbock, Texas, native tallied 40 kills, 23 digs and two service aces as NM State went 2-0 in WAC matches last week to remain in second place in the conference standings. Giddens, who posted double-doubles in both matches, averaged 5.00 kills on .281 hitting and 2.88 digs, all well above her season averages. She opened the week with 15 kills on .393 hitting to go with 11 digs in a sweep of Boise State. Giddens followed that up by posting a career-high 25 kills and 12 digs in a five-set win over national block leader Idaho. It was the most kills by an Aggie this season. With the two double-doubles last week, Giddens now has six on the season.

Erin Birmingham Earns ESPN/CoSIDA Academic All-District Honors

Erin BirminghamAggie senior middle blocker Erin Birmingham (Riverside, MO) earned District VI Second Team Academic All-American honors on Thursday as named by ESPN/CoSIDA.

Birmingham carries a 3.88 GPA in Individualized Studies/Exercise Science. Birmingham is currently fifth on the team in kills with 122 and averages 1.56 kills per set. She is second on the team in blocks 88 total blocks including 86 block assists and two solo blocks. She is also third on the team in service aces with 11.

The CoSIDA District VI covers six states, including Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. To be eligible for the team, a student-athlete must be in their second year at the institution and maintain a 3.30 cumulative grade point average.

NM State Volleyball Match vs. Fresno State On October 22 To Be Televised By ESPNU

DENVER, CO - ESPNU announced today that it will televise three Western Athletic Conference women's volleyball regular-season matches this season, including a match featuring the New Mexico State volleyball team.

The Aggie volleyball team will be on ESPNU, Thursday, Oct. 22 with the match now set for a 9 p.m. (MT) start. NM State faces Fresno State that day in an important conference match.

"We're excited to get that kind of exposure," head coach Mike Jordan said. "With AggieVison doing what they have done to give us exposure around the country, this is great because this is an even bigger network. It should help with recruiting and the program overall. Kayleigh Giddens Named WAC Volleyball Player Of The Week

Kayleigh GiddensDENVER, CO - Junior outside hitter Kayleigh Giddens has been named Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 21-27 after leading the New Mexico State volleyball team to wins over UTEP, Utah State and Louisiana Tech.

Giddens (Lubbock, Texas) marked 47 kills, 33 digs, three blocks and three service aces as the Aggies went 3-0 on the week. She averaged 4.27 kills and 3.00 digs per set, which was well above her season averages. After sitting out a couple of matches she is back in form as she is now third in the league in kills per set with 3.62.

"I feel pretty good and it was an important week for us last week so I knew I had to step up my play," Giddens said. "The team is coming together at the right time and my teammates, like Whitney Woods, also played well last week."  Continue Reading This Post >>

Krista Altermatt And Kelli Goodan Named To Preseason All-WAC Volleyball Team

Aggie seniors Krista Altermatt and Kelli Goodan both earned Preseason All-WAC honors as voted by the head coaches. Altermatt earned First Team All-Conference honors at the end of the 2008 season. This is Kelli Goodan's first preseason WAC honor. She earned Academic All-WAC honors during the 2008 season.

Altermatt returns as one of three seniors along with fellow honoree Goodan and middle hitter Erin Birmingham. Altermatt finished the 2008 season with the third most kills on the team and finished second on the team in service aces per game. Goodan finished in the top five in blocks per game in conference play.
