Ward Signs Contract Extension As NM State Skipper

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - New Mexico State Athletics Director Dr. McKinley Boston has recently announced that head baseball coach Rocky Ward has signed a contract extension with NM State.

The contract is a three-year extension and goes thru 2015. Ward has led the program for 16 seasons and has tallied 403 wins during his time with the Aggies.

"I am pleased to see Rocky Ward's team continually grow competitively and last year's WAC title and NCAA tournament berth proves that. I am just as pleased to see his student-athletes continue to perform very well academically," Boston said. Two Aggies Selected In MLB Draft

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Senior shortstop Zach Voight and junior catcher Zac Fisher of the New Mexico State baseball team were drafted by the Chicago White Sox on day three of the 2012 Major League Baseball draft.

Voight was selected by the White Sox in the 20th round as the 621st pick and Fisher was selected in the 27th round as the 831st pick. They are the first Aggies to be drafted since former Aggies Tyler Sturdevant, Jeff Farnham and Jake Wilson were picked in 2009.

Voight played shortstop for the Aggies in 2011 and 2012 and ended his career hitting .316 in 109 games played. He tallied 126 hits, 10 home runs and 94 RBIs, while posted 229 defensive assists and 124 putouts.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Zac Fisher Named Louisville Slugger Third Team All-American

TUCSON, AZ - Collegiate Baseball newspaper announced The Louisville Slugger NCAA Division I All-American baseball teams, Thursday, May 31, and New Mexico State junior catcher Zac Fisher was named a third-team selection.

Fisher becomes the second catcher from NM State to be named an All-American as former Aggie catcher Jeff Farnham was named an All-American in 2009. Fisher earned the honor after hitting .363 with 81 hits, six home runs and 58 RBI.

"We are very proud of Zac," head coach Rocky Ward said. "He is more than deserving of the honor and he represents the entire program, university and community."

Fisher adds to his list of honors as he was named a 2011 ABCA All-Region member, a preseason All-American (NCBWA,, and a 2011 & 2012 first team All-WAC selection.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggie Baseball Earns At-Large Bid; Heads To Tucson To Face Louisville

For just the third time in program history and the first time since 2003 the New Mexico State baseball team will head to the NCAA Regionals. The Aggies finished the season as WAC tri-champions with an 11-7 record in conference play and a 35-22 record overall notching victories over fellow Tucson Regional participant and host Arizona.

The Aggies will face regional 3-seed Louisville at 5:00 p.m. (MDT) on Thursday at HI Corbett Field in Tucson, Ariz. Louisville finished the season 39-20 overall and won the Big East regular season title.

Joining New Mexico State and Louisville in Tucson will be regional host Arizona and 4-seed Missouri, winners of the Big 12 conference tournament.

Aggie Baseball Lands Seven On Postseason All-WAC Teams

MESA, AZ - After finishing the regular season with a share of the Western Athletic Conference title and the number one seed in the WAC Tournament, the NM State baseball team received its most selections ever with seven on the All-WAC teams.

The Aggies had five first team selections, the most of any team in the WAC. Leading the Aggie selections was junior catcher Zac Fisher. Fisher was named first team all-conference after leading the league in batting average (.360) and RBI (57) throughout the entire season. Senior Tanner Waite earned a first team honor as an outfielder. Waite showed off his patience in the batters box all season long by leading the nation in walks with 67 heading into the week. Tanner Rust Named WAC Hitter Of The Week

DENVER, CO - New Mexico State first baseman Tanner Rust has been named the Verizon Western Athletic Conference Baseball Hitter of the Week, for his play during the week of May 14-20.

Rust, a sophomore from Lakeside, Calif. (El Capitan HS), hit .500 (10-for-20) with five runs scored, two doubles, a triple, a home run, five RBI and one walks as the Aggies went 4-1 on the week with a win over CSU Bakersfield and a three-game series sweep at San Jose State. Rust had 43 putouts, three assists and only one error on defense through his five games last week.

In a 12-10 loss at rival New Mexico, Rust went 3-for-5 at the plate with his first home run of the season. He also picked up two RBI at New Mexico.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Zac Fisher Named Semifinalist For 2012 Johnny Bench Award

WICHITA, KS - New Mexico State junior catcher Zac Fisher was named one of 12 semifinalists for the 2012 Johnny Bench Award presented by as announced by the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission yesterday.

The initial watch list started with 43 catchers from across the nation in NCAA Division I baseball and is now down to 12. Fisher, is one of two catchers from the Western Athletic Conference to be on the list with the other being Sacramento State's Derrick Chung.

Fisher leads the Aggies with a .360 batting average (73-of-203) heading into the final series of regular season play. He has posted 17 doubles, five home runs and 54 RBI on the season and is hitting .346 in WAC play.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Zach Voight Named To The Brooks Wallace Shortstop Of The Year Award Watch List

LUBBOCK, TX - The Pac-12 and the Southeastern Conference lead the pack with seven players each on the first 2012 Brooks Wallace Shortstop of the Year Award watch list.

The Wallace Award, sponsored by Mizuno, recognizes the nation’s top shortstop and will be presented on June 30 in Lubbock, Texas, as part of the College Baseball Hall of Fame’s Night of Champions.

The Big 12 has five players on the list and the ACC features four. Several other conferences also have multiple players on the watch list.

“It really says something about the high quality of play in many of these conferences that they have so many players on the watch list,” said Wallace Award co-chair Tyler Young. “As conference play winds down, it will be interesting to see how these players finish the season and to see which conferences will still have multiple players on the list.”  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggies In The Outfield

LAS CRUCES, N.M.There is an old adage in baseball that says, “To win you have to score runs, but to score runs you have to first get on base.”  The New Mexico State baseball team’s three starting outfielders have taken that to heart while helping the Aggies to a 30-11 record, a first-place standing in the Western Athletic Conference and a top 25 ranking throughout the month of April.

Senior left fielder Tanner Waite, junior center fielder Kyle Phillips and senior right fielder Bryan Karraker have combined to score 128 runs, nearly one-third of the Aggies’ runs this season.  The three have also become one of the best fielding groups in recent Aggie history, something that they all attribute to being good friends.    Continue Reading This Post >>

Zac Fisher Named WAC Hitter Of The Week

DENVER, CO - New Mexico State catcher Zac Fisher has been named the Verizon Western Athletic Conference Baseball Hitter of the Week for April 2-8.

Fisher, a junior from Fontana, Calif. (A.B. Miller HS), hit .375 (6-for-16) with three runs scored, a home run, three RBI and three walks as the Aggies went 3-1 on the week. Fisher, who leads the WAC with 53 hits and 45 RBI on the year, brought in the tying run on a single through the right side as the Aggies came from behind to defeat Nevada 7-6 in the series finale to help NMSU win the three-game series. Fisher started the week going 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI against in-state rival New Mexico to lead the Aggies to a 7-5 win.
