Joey Ortiz Named WAC Baseball Hitter Of The Week

DENVER, CO - The Western Athletic Conference announced it’s players of the week on Monday. Following a stellar weekend at the dish, NM State’s Joey Ortiz earned his second conference hitter of the week nod.

Ortiz led the WAC with a .500 batting average on the week and helped lead the Aggies to a 2-1 road series win over conference foe Northern Colorado. The series opener saw the sophomore go 3-for-3 from the dish with a pair of RBI and scoring one run himself.

This play was followed up in a 12-9 NM State victory in game two where the Garden Grove, Calif. native had a pair of base knocks with two RBI and three runs scored. Then in the series finale, Ortiz added another hit and run scored to help the Aggies to a 6-3 win and series victory.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Caleb Henderson Named WAC Baseball Hitter Of The Week

DENVER, CO - Following league opening play, the Western Athletic Conference announced players of the week on Monday. A strong weekend at the dish that proved pivotal in a series win over Seattle U, NM State’s Caleb Henderson earned the nod for hitter of the week.

Henderson came up big in the series opener against the Redhawks on Friday. The junior hit the go-ahead three-run home run to give the Aggies a three-run lead and an eventual 12-6 victory. The Conifer, Colo. natives bat stayed hot in the series finale as he crushed a two-run homer in an explosive third inning and added a three-run bomb in the fourth as NM State won in seven innings on Sunday, 12-2.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Joey Ortiz Named WAC Hitter Of The Week

DENVER, CO - NM State’s Joey Ortiz has been named Western Athletic Conference Hitter for Feb. 26 – March 4.

Ortiz, a sophomore shortstop from Garden Grove, Calif. (Pacific HS), totaled three home runs and 12 RBIs on the week. He started the week against Arizona, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs in a close 5-4 loss. Against Harvard, he was 5-for-14 from the plate, with three home runs, four walks, eight runs scored and 12 RBIs. Five of those RBIs came in the series finale, including a grand slam in the sixth inning. On the season, he leads the WAC with 24 runs scored and 12 walks and is among the leaders in several other categories.

NMSU Baseball Sweeps Weekly WAC Awards

DENVER, CO - NM State’s Noah Haupt and Kyle Bradish have been named Western Athletic Conference Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for Feb. 19 – Feb. 25.

Haupt, a freshman designated hitter from Clovis, Calif. (Clovis North HS), was instrumental in the Aggies’ record-setting weekend, totaling 11 runs and 15 RBIs on the week. Haupt was 11-for-15 from the plate with six extra-base hits, posting a .611 batting average to go along with a 1.222 slugging percentage and .625 on-base percentage. His biggest game came in NM State’s 39-0 win over Mississippi Valley State on Friday night, going 6-for-7 with a double, two home runs, six runs scored and 10 RBIs. Marcus Still Named WAC Baseball Hitter Of The Week

DENVER, CO - NM State’s Marcus Still has been named Western Athletic Conference Hitter for Feb. 12 – Feb. 18.

Still, a senior outfielder from New Orleans (Queen Creek HS), was nearly perfect from the play, going 8-for-9 with four walks as the Aggies took two of three from Towson. In the season opener, Still was 2-for-2 with a pair of walks and a pair of RBIs in a 24-2 win. His only falter came in game two, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored in an 11-6 loss. The Aggies and Still bounced back on Sunday as the outfielder was 4-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored in a 13-3 win. His .889 average leads the WAC after the opening weekend of play.

NMSU Baseball Picked To Finish Second In WAC, Fishback And Bradish Named Preseason Player And Pitcher Of The Year

DENVER, CO – The Western Athletic Conference announced the 2018 baseball preseason honors on Wednesday morning. New Mexico State’s Mason Fishback and Kyle Bradish were selected as WAC Preseason Player and Pitcher of the Year, respectively. In total four Aggies were selected for the 2018 Preseason All-WAC Team, which led the conference.

Fishback was named a Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Second Team All-American and earned First Team All-WAC honors in 2017. The catcher became just the second player in program history to earn Collegiate Baseball Newspaper All-American honors. In 53 starts the Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. native boasted a .365 batting average to go along with 16 doubles, eight home runs and 52 runs batted in.  Continue Reading This Post >>

NMSU Baseball Releases 2018 Schedule

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - New Mexico State head baseball coach Brian Green announced a competitive 2018 schedule for the Aggies on Wednesday afternoon.

Marcel Renteria Selected In Sixth Round Of MLB Draft By New York Mets

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The New Mexico State baseball team made history after day two of the Major League Baseball Draft on Tuesday. NM State pitcher Marcel Renteria was selected in the sixth round, pick 187, by the New York Mets.

This early draft selection of Renteria was the second year in a row that an Aggie has been taken in the first six rounds, joining Daniel Johnson who was selected in the fifth round of the 2016 draft by the Washington Nationals. This was the first time in program history that two Aggies have been drafted in the first six rounds in back-to-back years. NMSU Baseball Places Seven On All-WAC Teams

DENVER, CO - The Western Athletic Conference announced its 2017 All-WAC baseball teams and major awards on Tuesday night. All-WAC selections were made by the league’s eight head coaches after the regular-season.

Seven New Mexico State players earned recognition on the All-WAC baseball teams, tied for the most this season with CSU Bakersfield and the most in school history since 2012.

Catcher Mason Fishback earned a First-Team All-WAC nod after boasting a conference leading .421 batting average and a .705 slugging percentage with 33 runs batted in over 24 conference games. Tristen Carranza Named WAC Hiter Of The Week

DENVER, CO - NM State’s Tristen Carranza has been named Western Athletic Conference Hitter of the Week for May 8 – May 14.

Carranza, a sophomore first baseman from El Centro, Calif. (Brawley HS), led the Aggies to a sweep in Chicago, going 5-for-10 from the plate for a league-leading .500 average. Earning a hit in all three games, his best game came on Saturday, going 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI in a 10-4 win. He leads the WAC in home runs this season with 16 and is tied for the lead in total bases with 118. With the sweep, NM State clinched the top seed in the upcoming WAC Tournament on May 24-28 in Mesa, Ariz.
