NMSU Softball Releases 2017 Schedule

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Fresh off a 38-win season, NM State softball announced its 2017 schedule that features seven programs from a Power 5 conference and five programs that concluded last season top-30 nationally in RPI. NM State will start the season on an eight-game homestand, beginning Feb. 11.

“Every year we try to challenge ourselves so we are ready for the intensity of conference play and the postseason,” head coach Kathy Rodolph said. “Once again we are hosting high profile programs with Oregon State, Tennessee, Depaul and Arizona all visiting Las Cruces. Six NMSU Softball Players Named NFCA Scholar-Athletes

LOUISVILLE, KY - Six NM State softball players have earned NFCA Easton Scholar-Athlete honors on Thursday.

Karysta Donisthorpe, Makayla McAdams, Brennalyn Nakamura, Haley Nakamura, Tatum Reedy and Brandi Wilke all received the award after posting a 3.5-or-better grade point average for the 2015-16 academic year.

Donisthorpe, McAdams, B. Nakamura, H. Nakamura and Reedy all earned Academic All-WAC honors as well this past season. On top of their academic success, Donisthorpe and Reedy tallied WAC All-Tournament and First-Team honors while McAdams picked up first-team honors.

The National Fastpitch Coaches Association Easton Scholar-Athlete honors go to all Division I softball players who post a 3.5 GPA or better for the previous academic year. This season a total of 1,240 players across the country reached that mark.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggie Softball Takes Home WAC Player, Freshman And Coach Of The Year Honors

DENVER, CO, - For the second year in a row, the NM State softball team dominated the Western Athletic Conference awards as Fiana Finau was named WAC Player of the Year, Kelsey Horton was selected as Freshman of the Year and head coach Kathy Rodolph was named Coach of the Year. In Addition, Karysta Donisthorpe, Makayla McAdams, Finau and Horton were chosen for the First Team, while Victoria Castro, Corrin Green, Tatum Reedy and Rachel Rodriguez rounded out the awards with Second Team Honors.

This is the fourth year in a row an Aggie has been named WAC Player of the Year. Additionally, this is the second year in a row and third overall that the team has had a Freshman of the Year and a Coach of the Year selection.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Karysta Donisthorpe Named WAC Pitcher Of The Week

DENVER, CO - After throwing six shutout innings and leading the Aggies to a 3-2 win over Rio Grande rival New Mexico, NM State softball’s Karysta Donisthorpe has been name the Western Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week, announced the league office Monday. This is Donisthorpe’s second honor of the season and seventh of her career.

The Farmington, N.M. native went 1-0 during the week and had a 0.88 ERA. After allowing a run in the bottom of the second inning, she threw five straight shutout innings to help the Aggies force overtime against New Mexico.

Donisthorpe allowed just one earned run and struck out six batters during the eight-inning game. This is the second complete, extra-inning game Donisthorpe has thrown this season. The first was a 2-1, eight-inning victory over BYU in the Mary Nutter Classic on Feb. 25. The redshirt senior has had eight complete games this season.

Kelsey Horton Named One Of 25 Finalists For NFCA National Freshman Of The Year

LOUISVILLE, KY - NM State softball player Kelsey Horton has been selected to the 2016 Schutt Sport/NFCA Division I National Freshman of the Year Top 25 list, announced by the association Thursday.

Horton, who has started all 48 games at first base for the Aggies this season, leads the WAC in slugging percentage (.748), runs scored (47), home runs (13) and total bases (110), and ranks second in batting average (.395), hits (58) and RBIs (44). She ranks 23rd nationally in home runs, 27th in RBIs and 43rd in slugging percentage.

The list will be narrowed to 10 finalists on Thursday, May 12, and the top three finalists will be announced on Wednesday, May 25. The winner will be announced on Tuesday, May 31. The complete Top 25 list is below.

Aggies Sweep Weekly WAC Softball Awards

DENVER, CO - NM State’s Corrin Green and Kayla Green have been named the Western Athletic Conference Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for April 11-17. This is the first honor of the season and second of her career for Corrin Green and the first-ever honor for Kayla Green.

Corrin Green, a sophomore designated player from Glendale, Ariz., hit .833 with five hits, one home run, four RBIs and two walks in a road series at Grand Canyon. She posted a 1.333 slugging percentage and .875 on-base percentage over the three games. In the first game of the series as a pinch hitter, she walked in her only plate appearance. In the nightcap, Corrin Green went 2-for-2 with a home run, a walk and two RBIs. She closed out the series with a 3-for-4 performance, driving in two runs.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Fiana Finau Named NFCA/Louisville Slugger Player Of The Week

LOUISVILLE, KY - After leading the Aggies to a 4-2 record and being selected as the Western Athletic Conference Hitter of the Week, NM State softball’s Fiana Finau has been named the Louisville Slugger NFCA Player of the Week, announced the association Tuesday. Finau is the first Aggie in program history to earn this honor.

“Fiana did a great job last week,” said head coach Kathy Rodolph. “She is a top-tier hitter and we are very proud that she has been acknowledged by the NFCA.”

Finau went 11-for-19 and scored five runs in the last six games. She racked up three doubles and three home runs, which included a game-winning two-RBI home run against Maine on Sunday. Finau posted a 1.211 slugging percentage and a .600 on-base percentage as she racked up at least one hit in five of six games. Fiana Finau Named WAC Hitter Of The Week

DENVER, CO - NM State’s Fiana Finau has been named the Western Athletic Conference Hitter of the Week for March 7-13. This is the first honor of the season and fifth of her career for Finau..

Finau, a senior outfielder from Chula Vista, Calif., hit .579 with 11 hits, three doubles, three home runs, five runs scored and 13 RBIs over six games last week. She posted a 1.211 slugging percentage and a .600 on-base percentage with a hit in five of six games and four multi-hit games on the week. In a single game against rival New Mexico last Tuesday, Finau went 3-for-3 with a double, a home run and four RBIs. She also went 3-for-4 with a double and four RBIs against East Carolina.

Kelsey Horton Named WAC Hitter Of The Week

DENVER, CO - NM State’s Kelsey Horton has been named the Western Athletic Conference Hitter of the Week for Feb. 15-21. This is the first-ever honor for Horton.

Horton, a freshman first baseman from San Clemente, Calif., hit .400 with a double, three home runs and seven RBIs over six games as the Aggies went 4-2 last week. She posted a 1.067 slugging percentage and .471 on-base percentage and had one stolen base. In the final game of the week, Horton was 3-for-3 with two runs scored, a double and a grand slam.

Aggie Softball Picked To Win WAC, Fiana Finau Selected Preseason Player Of The Year

DENVER, CO - NM State is the preseason favorite to win the 2016 Western Athletic Conference softball title in a vote of the league’s six head coaches, who could not vote for their own team.

The coaches also voted preseason award winners and Aggie Fiana Finau was selected as the Preseason Player of the Year and Missouri-Kansas City’s Katie Kelley was selected as the Preseason Pitcher of the Year.

The Aggies took the top spot in the preseason poll with 25 points and five first-place votes. Grand Canyon was picked second with 20 points and the other first-place vote, edging out CSU Bakersfield in third place with 18 points. UMKC was fourth with 11 points, followed by Seattle U and Utah Valley with nine and seven points, respectively.

NM State placed the most players on the Preseason All-WAC team with six, while Grand Canyon had three.  Continue Reading This Post >>
