Kelsey Horton Named WAC Hitter Of The Week

DENVER, CO - NM State’s Kelsey Horton has been named the Western Athletic Conference Hitter of the Week for Feb. 15-21. This is the first-ever honor for Horton.

Horton, a freshman first baseman from San Clemente, Calif., hit .400 with a double, three home runs and seven RBIs over six games as the Aggies went 4-2 last week. She posted a 1.067 slugging percentage and .471 on-base percentage and had one stolen base. In the final game of the week, Horton was 3-for-3 with two runs scored, a double and a grand slam.

Aggie Softball Picked To Win WAC, Fiana Finau Selected Preseason Player Of The Year

DENVER, CO - NM State is the preseason favorite to win the 2016 Western Athletic Conference softball title in a vote of the league’s six head coaches, who could not vote for their own team.

The coaches also voted preseason award winners and Aggie Fiana Finau was selected as the Preseason Player of the Year and Missouri-Kansas City’s Katie Kelley was selected as the Preseason Pitcher of the Year.

The Aggies took the top spot in the preseason poll with 25 points and five first-place votes. Grand Canyon was picked second with 20 points and the other first-place vote, edging out CSU Bakersfield in third place with 18 points. UMKC was fourth with 11 points, followed by Seattle U and Utah Valley with nine and seven points, respectively.

NM State placed the most players on the Preseason All-WAC team with six, while Grand Canyon had three.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggie Softball Sights Seven For 2016

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Seven new players have signed their National Letters of Intent to play with the NM State softball team for the 2016 season, announced head coach Kathy Rodolph on Wednesday. Caity Szczesny, Kaitlyn Rubio, Samaria Diaz, Alexis Devers, Jeanelle Medina, Destiny Blueford and Shelby Shultes will join the team next fall.

Szczesny, from Woodcreek High School, had a batting average of .530 through 83 at bats in 2015. She amassed 44 hits, which included 10 doubles, three triples and six home runs. Szczesny racked up 32 runs and 26 RBIs. She was a perfect 15/15 in stolen bases, and she helped her team become undefeated league champions. Szczesny led the league in both home runs and slugging percentage. She was also second in batting average, runs and on base percentage and third in stolen bases.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggie Softball Announces 2016 Schedule

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Following a spectacular, record breaking season that featured a 14-1 conference record, the NM State softball program has set another challenging schedule for the 2016 season as announced by head coach Kathy Rodolph on Wednesday. The Western Athletic Conference regular season and conference tournament champion team opens the season on Feb. 12 and will face 27 non-conference opponents prior to league play.

"This is by far our most aggressive schedule in the last 13 years at least," said Rodolph. "We will play 10 games against teams with a top 20 RPI. We will play six games with a top 50 RPI. One of the highlights is attending the Mary Nutter Classic in Palm Springs, Calif. This is the most prestigious pre-playoff event for Division I softball. Stefanie Ewing Named NM State Softball Assistant Coach

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - NM State head softball coach Kathy Rodolph has appointed Stefanie Ewing as assistant softball coach as announced on Friday.

Prior to NM State, Ewing was an assistant coach for the Arizona Firecrackers under 18 Gold team and the Arizona Hotshots Club team from 2011-15. While there, she coached over 30 players to be All-Region, All-Conference, All-Americans, Freshmen of the Year and Academic All-Americans at the Division I-III level.

In addition to coaching the Firecrackers and the Hotshots, Ewing was the varsity softball coach at Chaparral High School from 2012-15. The Scottsdale, Ariz. native guided Chaparral to the state finals in 2013 and the state semi-finals in 2014. Following her team’s run in the state tournament, Ewing was named Arizona Big School Coach of the Year in 2013.  Continue Reading This Post >>

WAC Announces All-Academic Honors for 2015 Spring Sports, Freshmen and Transfers, Sixty-Six Aggies Honored

DENVER, CO - The 2015 Academic All-WAC baseball, softball, men's and women's golf, men's and women's tennis and men's and women's outdoor track and field teams have been announced, in addition to the Academic All-WAC freshmen/transfer teams for all sports.

A total of 311 spring student-athletes were named to the list, while 400 freshmen and transfers were added for a total of 711 student-athletes. To be eligible, a student-athlete must have completed at least one academic year, have at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average and have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's contests. Finau And Rodriguez Named To NFCA All-Region Team

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - New Mexico State softball players Staci Rodriguez and Fiana Finau have been selected as part of the National Fastpitch Coaches’ Association (NFCA) All-Region teams, the association announced Thursday.

The Aggies belong to the Pacific Region, where Finau was placed on the all-region second team while Rodriguez was placed on the all-region third team. The Pacific Region is one of the toughest regions in the country, a region that includes powerhouse Oregon, Cal, Washington and Fresno State among others.

“Fiana and Staci have had stellar seasons so far and certainly have earned the all-region nod,” NM State head coach Kathy Rodolph said. “We are very proud of their body of work and glad it was recognized in our tough region.”  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggie Softball To Face Minnesota At NCAA Regional In Tucson

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The Western Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament champion New Mexico State softball team will play in Tucson, Arizona during the Tucson Regional of the NCAA Softball Championship beginning Friday, the NCAA announced Sunday.

The double-elimination format regional will be played from Friday, May 15 through Sunday, May 17. Joining the Aggies (46-14) in Tucson as part of the four-team regional will be host and 12th-seeded Arizona (38-17), St. John’s (28-17) and NM State’s first opponent, Minnesota (46-9).

The Aggies and Golden Gophers will meet on Friday at a time to be determined later. The winner will play the winner of the Arizona-St. John’s matchup while the two losing teams will meet in an elimination game.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggie Softball Earns Multiple WAC Softball Honors

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Six New Mexico State softball players along with head coach Kathy Rodolph were honored on Wednesday as the Western Athletic Conference announced its annual end of the year conference awards.

Aggie senior Staci Rodriguez, the Preseason Player of the Year, showed why she was picked before the season as the conference’s best player as she won her second WAC Player of the Year honor in three years.

Rodolph was named the WAC Coach of the Year while dual-threat Dallas McBride was named the WAC Freshman of the Year and an All-WAC first teamer. Joining Rodriguez and McBride on the All-WAC first team is senior Kelsey Dodd, junior Fiana Finau and sophomore Haley Nakamura. Aggie Softball Sweeps Weekly WAC Awards

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - New Mexico State softball team members Haley Nakamura and Karysta Donisthorpe garnered the Western Athletic Conference Hitter and Pitcher of the Week awards, respectively, as the conference announced its final weekly honors this season on Monday.

This is the second time this season the Aggies have swept both awards in the same week, with the first time coming on Mar. 30 when Donisthorpe was the WAC’s top pitcher and Fiana Finau was tabbed the hitter of the week.

It is the first-ever honor for Nakamura and the fourth honor of the season and fifth of her career for Donisthorpe. The two honors brings NM State’s season total to eight hitter of the week awards and five pitcher of the week awards for a total of 13 honors, the most conference weekly awards in program history.  Continue Reading This Post >>
