Butler, Green Sweep WAC Softball Weekly Honors

DENVER, CO – New Mexico State’s Nikki Butler and Kayla Green have been named the Western Athletic Conference Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for March 27-April 1.

This is the third Hitter of the Week honor for NM State and the first honor for Butler. Green earns New Mexico State's first Pitcher of the Week honor this season.

Merina Ili Named WAC Softball Hitter Of The Week

DENVER, CO - NM State’s Merina Ili has been named the Western Athletic Conference Hitter of the Week for Feb. 13-19. This is the first-ever honor for both.

Ili, a sophomore designated player from Long Beach, Calif., hit .583 over four games last week with three doubles and her first collegiate home run. She had seven RBIs and posted a 1.083 slugging percentage and .615 on-base percentage. In a run-rule victory over Northern Colorado last Thursday, Ili doubled and homered, driving in four runs. The following day against DePaul, she had a pair of doubles.

Kelsey Horton Named WAC Hitter Of The Week

DENVER, CO - NM State’s Kelsey Horton has been named the Western Athletic Conference Hitter of the Week for Feb. 6-12. This is the second career honor for Horton.

Horton, a sophomore first baseman from San Clemente, Calif., had an extra base hit and an RBI in each of the Aggies’ three games last weekend, including two doubles and a home run in the series finale against UTSA. She had six hits in 12 at bats for a .500 batting average. Horton tallied three doubles, two home runs and four RBIs over the three games and posted a 1.667 slugging percentage and .727 on-base percentage in leading the Aggies to a 2-1 record.

NMSU Softball Picked As Co-Preseason Favorites; Kelsey Horton Named WAC Preseason Player Of The Year

DENVER, CO - Grand Canyon and NM State are the preseason favorites to win the 2017 Western Athletic Conference softball title in a vote of the league’s six head coaches, who could not vote for their own team.

The coaches also voted preseason award winners and NM State’s Kelsey Horton was selected as the Preseason Player of the Year and Grand Canyon’s Taylor Nowlin was selected as the Preseason Pitcher of the Year.

The Lopes and Aggies tied for the top spot in the preseason poll with 23 points and three first-place votes each. CSU Bakersfield and Seattle U tied for third place with 13 points apiece. UMKC was fifth with 11 points, while Utah Valley rounded out the poll in sixth place with seven points.

NM State placed the most players on the Preseason All-WAC team with four, while Grand Canyon had three and UMKC and Utah Valley had two apiece.

The 2017 season begins Friday, Feb. 10. The 2017 WAC Softball Tournament will be held May 11-13, at the NM State Softball Complex in Las Cruces, N.M., and will include all five eligible teams.

NMSU Softball Announces 2017 Signing Class

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - NM State head softball coach Kathy Rodolph once again reloads her roster with a staunch signing class for the 2017-18 season. This year’s signing class features two pitchers, two infielders and a catcher. Of the five committed to New Mexico State, four players hail from California while one comes by way of Arizona.

“We are very excited about our 2017 signing class. It's a class that has speed, pitching and defense,” Rodolph said. They have great character with the athletic potential to help us immediately.”

NMSU Softball Releases 2017 Schedule

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Fresh off a 38-win season, NM State softball announced its 2017 schedule that features seven programs from a Power 5 conference and five programs that concluded last season top-30 nationally in RPI. NM State will start the season on an eight-game homestand, beginning Feb. 11.

“Every year we try to challenge ourselves so we are ready for the intensity of conference play and the postseason,” head coach Kathy Rodolph said. “Once again we are hosting high profile programs with Oregon State, Tennessee, Depaul and Arizona all visiting Las Cruces. Six NMSU Softball Players Named NFCA Scholar-Athletes

LOUISVILLE, KY - Six NM State softball players have earned NFCA Easton Scholar-Athlete honors on Thursday.

Karysta Donisthorpe, Makayla McAdams, Brennalyn Nakamura, Haley Nakamura, Tatum Reedy and Brandi Wilke all received the award after posting a 3.5-or-better grade point average for the 2015-16 academic year.

Donisthorpe, McAdams, B. Nakamura, H. Nakamura and Reedy all earned Academic All-WAC honors as well this past season. On top of their academic success, Donisthorpe and Reedy tallied WAC All-Tournament and First-Team honors while McAdams picked up first-team honors.

The National Fastpitch Coaches Association Easton Scholar-Athlete honors go to all Division I softball players who post a 3.5 GPA or better for the previous academic year. This season a total of 1,240 players across the country reached that mark.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggie Softball Takes Home WAC Player, Freshman And Coach Of The Year Honors

DENVER, CO, - For the second year in a row, the NM State softball team dominated the Western Athletic Conference awards as Fiana Finau was named WAC Player of the Year, Kelsey Horton was selected as Freshman of the Year and head coach Kathy Rodolph was named Coach of the Year. In Addition, Karysta Donisthorpe, Makayla McAdams, Finau and Horton were chosen for the First Team, while Victoria Castro, Corrin Green, Tatum Reedy and Rachel Rodriguez rounded out the awards with Second Team Honors.

Karysta Donisthorpe Named WAC Pitcher Of The Week

DENVER, CO - After throwing six shutout innings and leading the Aggies to a 3-2 win over Rio Grande rival New Mexico, NM State softball’s Karysta Donisthorpe has been name the Western Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week, announced the league office Monday. This is Donisthorpe’s second honor of the season and seventh of her career.

The Farmington, N.M. native went 1-0 during the week and had a 0.88 ERA. After allowing a run in the bottom of the second inning, she threw five straight shutout innings to help the Aggies force overtime against New Mexico.

Donisthorpe allowed just one earned run and struck out six batters during the eight-inning game. This is the second complete, extra-inning game Donisthorpe has thrown this season. The first was a 2-1, eight-inning victory over BYU in the Mary Nutter Classic on Feb. 25. The redshirt senior has had eight complete games this season.

Kelsey Horton Named One Of 25 Finalists For NFCA National Freshman Of The Year

LOUISVILLE, KY - NM State softball player Kelsey Horton has been selected to the 2016 Schutt Sport/NFCA Division I National Freshman of the Year Top 25 list, announced by the association Thursday.

Horton, who has started all 48 games at first base for the Aggies this season, leads the WAC in slugging percentage (.748), runs scored (47), home runs (13) and total bases (110), and ranks second in batting average (.395), hits (58) and RBIs (44). She ranks 23rd nationally in home runs, 27th in RBIs and 43rd in slugging percentage.

The list will be narrowed to 10 finalists on Thursday, May 12, and the top three finalists will be announced on Wednesday, May 25. The winner will be announced on Tuesday, May 31. The complete Top 25 list is below.
