NMSU Softball's Cat Heifner Takes Batting Coach Position At Minnesota

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - New Mexico State softball's associate head coach Catherine Heifner is headed to the University of Minnesota to become the Gophers' hitting coach the school announced on Tuesday. Heifner takes the position after spending 14 seasons at NM State.

During her time with the Aggies, Heifner helped New Mexico State to four Western Athletic Conference regular season titles and three WAC tournament titles. She coached three WAC Freshman of the Year honorees including Kelsey Horton, who was also a Top-10 finalist for the Schutt Sports / NFCA National Freshman of the Year award. Under Heifner's guidance, the Aggies have won five-straight WAC Player of the Year honors.

"Cat Heifner has worked tirelessly over the past 14 seasons to establish the New Mexico State offense as one of the top offenses in the country," head coach Kathy Rodolph said.  Continue Reading This Post >>

NMSU Softball Heads To Tucson For NCAA Regional

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The New Mexico State softball team will play in the Tucson, Arizona Regional of the NCAA Softball Championship beginning Friday, the NCAA announced on Sunday. The Western Athletic Conference tournament champions take on the Arizona Wildcats on Friday, May 19, at 7:30 MT. Fans will be able to watch NM State on ESPNU.

The double-elimination format regional will be played from Friday, May 19 through Sunday, May 21. Joining the Aggies (46-14) in Tucson as part of the four-team regional will be host and second-seeded Arizona (48-7) Saint Francis (Pa.) (48-9) and South Carolina (32-23).

The Aggies have faced Arizona twice before this season when the Wildcats came to the NM State Softball Complex for a doubleheader. Fans can purchase tickets for the regional on site.

Kelsey Horton Named WAC Softball Player Of The Year

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The Western Athletic Conference announced the All-WAC honors on Wednesday. The Aggies earned seven accolades, including Kelsey Horton as the WAC Player of the Year. This is the fifth-straight year NM State has taken home the Player of the Year award.

Horton headlined the player awards, earning WAC Player of the Year for the first time in her career. She broke the conference records for batting average (.558) and slugging percentage (1.258) and tied the record for home runs per game (0.60) in league play. Horton led the WAC this season in on-base percentage (.678), runs (20), hits (24), RBIs (22), homers (9), total bases (54), and walks (13) during conference play.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Alexis Maynez Named WAC Softball Hitter Of The Week

DENVER, CO - New Mexico State's Alexis Maynez was named the Western Athletic Conference Hitter of the Week, the league announced on Monday. This is her first weekly honor this season and the first of her career at NM State.

Maynez, a sophomore catcher from Las Cruces, N.M., hit .833 with three extra-base hits and two RBI last week. Maynez recorded an exceptional 1.833 slugging percentage and a .833 on-base clip. She hit the game-ending home run in the fifth inning in the Aggies' 8-0 shutout of UMKC on Saturday. Maynez also hit a double and a triple in the second game of the doubleheader against the Roos. She entered the week batting .125 with a .313 slugging percentage and .263 on-base percentage; she now posts a .318 batting average, .333 slugging percentage and a .600 on-base percentage.

The Aggies take on No. 1 Arizona at home on Tuesday with the first pitch of the doubleheader scheduled for 4 p.m. (MT).

Kelsey Horton Named WAC Hitter Of The Week

DENVER, CO – NM State’s Kelsey Horton has been named the Western Athletic Conference Hitter of the Week for April 3-9. This is the second honor of the season and third of her career for Horton.

Horton, a sophomore second baseman from San Clemente, Calif., hit .600 with four extra-base hits and six RBIs last week. She hit three home runs and a double with two walks and four runs scored over in three games. Horton recorded an impressive 1.600 slugging percentage and a .667 on-base clip. She opened the week with a 2-for-2 performance with a double and one run scored in the series opener at Seattle U. In the second game of the series, Horton tied the program and WAC records by hitting three home runs in the Aggies’ 14-6 victory over the Redhawks. She hit homers in three straight at-bats, becoming the first WAC player to do so in a conference game since 2010. In WAC games, Horton leads the league with a .632 batting average.

Butler, Green Sweep WAC Softball Weekly Honors

DENVER, CO – New Mexico State’s Nikki Butler and Kayla Green have been named the Western Athletic Conference Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for March 27-April 1.

This is the third Hitter of the Week honor for NM State and the first honor for Butler. Green earns New Mexico State's first Pitcher of the Week honor this season.

Merina Ili Named WAC Softball Hitter Of The Week

DENVER, CO - NM State’s Merina Ili has been named the Western Athletic Conference Hitter of the Week for Feb. 13-19. This is the first-ever honor for both.

Ili, a sophomore designated player from Long Beach, Calif., hit .583 over four games last week with three doubles and her first collegiate home run. She had seven RBIs and posted a 1.083 slugging percentage and .615 on-base percentage. In a run-rule victory over Northern Colorado last Thursday, Ili doubled and homered, driving in four runs. The following day against DePaul, she had a pair of doubles.

DENVER, CO - NM State’s Kelsey Horton has been named the Western Athletic Conference Hitter of the Week for Feb. 6-12. This is the second career honor for Horton.

Horton, a sophomore first baseman from San Clemente, Calif., had an extra base hit and an RBI in each of the Aggies’ three games last weekend, including two doubles and a home run in the series finale against UTSA. She had six hits in 12 at bats for a .500 batting average. Horton tallied three doubles, two home runs and four RBIs over the three games and posted a 1.667 slugging percentage and .727 on-base percentage in leading the Aggies to a 2-1 record.

NMSU Softball Picked As Co-Preseason Favorites; Kelsey Horton Named WAC Preseason Player Of The Year

DENVER, CO - Grand Canyon and NM State are the preseason favorites to win the 2017 Western Athletic Conference softball title in a vote of the league’s six head coaches, who could not vote for their own team.

The coaches also voted preseason award winners and NM State’s Kelsey Horton was selected as the Preseason Player of the Year and Grand Canyon’s Taylor Nowlin was selected as the Preseason Pitcher of the Year.

The Lopes and Aggies tied for the top spot in the preseason poll with 23 points and three first-place votes each. CSU Bakersfield and Seattle U tied for third place with 13 points apiece. UMKC was fifth with 11 points, while Utah Valley rounded out the poll in sixth place with seven points.

NM State placed the most players on the Preseason All-WAC team with four, while Grand Canyon had three and UMKC and Utah Valley had two apiece.

The 2017 season begins Friday, Feb. 10. The 2017 WAC Softball Tournament will be held May 11-13, at the NM State Softball Complex in Las Cruces, N.M., and will include all five eligible teams.
