Gwen Murphy Named 2015-16 Joe Kearney Award Winner

DENVER, CO - NM State volleyball player Gwen Murphy is the 2015-16 Western Athletic Conference Joe Kearney Award winner. Named in honor of former WAC commissioner Joe Kearney, the awards are given annually to the top male and female student-athletes in the WAC.

The 2015 WAC Player of the Year, Murphy was an American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) honorable mention All-American, just the seventh player in NM State history to earn the honor. She was also named AVCA first team All-Region, first team All-WAC, was the MVP of the 2015 WAC Tournament and was a three-time WAC Player of the Week. Murphy finished the season ranked 10th nationally with a .421 hitting percentage, the third-highest single-season mark in WAC history.  Continue Reading This Post >>

WAC Announces All-Academic Honors for 2015-16 Spring Sports, Freshmen And Transfers

DENVER, CO - The 2016 Academic All-WAC baseball, softball, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis, and men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams have been announced, in addition to the Academic All-WAC freshmen/transfer teams for all sports.

A total of 331 spring student-athletes were named to the list, while 316 freshmen and transfers were added for a total of 647 student-athletes. To be eligible, a student-athlete must have completed at least one academic year, have at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average and have participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s contests. The following is a list of the honorees:

New Mexico State Wins Second Consecutive WAC Commissioner's Cup

DENVER, CO - For the second consecutive year, the NM State athletics department won the Western Athletic Conference annual Commissioner's Cup with 90.25 points, which tops the 2014-15 total of 89.25 points. The Commissioner's Cup is awarded to the WAC school that performs the best in each of the conference's 19 men's and women's sports. The Aggies have 15 teams that compete in the league.

"Winning the Western Athletic Conference commissioners cup is an honor and reflects the hard work of all student-athletes, coaches and administrators," said Director of Athletics Mario Moccia. "One of our three core principals is competitive intensity, and winning this comprehensive athletic award is extremely rewarding. NMSU Meet APR Standards In All Sports For 2014-15

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - New Mexico State University Athletics once again posted tremendous Academic Progress Rate (APR) results on Wednesday when the NCAA released its annual reports.

Using data from the 2014-15 academic year, all NM State sports ranked above the 930 mark for the second time since the NCAA instituted the APR as a measuring tool starting with the 2004-05 year. Schools with a four-year score below 930 could be subject to penalties including reduced practice time and loss of postseason.

“I am very pleased that we have put together two consecutive years of having all our programs above 930, and again have programs nationally recognized,” said NM State Director of Athletics Mario Moccia. “It shows we have made a great effort to move the needle, but we are far from satisfied and our coaches and staff will continue to preach academic integrity and hard work in the classroom to continue to improve our scores.”  Continue Reading This Post >>

NM State Announces New Partnership With Under Armour

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - New Mexico State University and Under Armour, Inc. (NYSE: UA) announced a new partnership agreement. The Baltimore-based global leader in performance footwear, apparel and equipment will become the official outfitter of NM State Athletics beginning July 1, 2016.

As part of the multi-year agreement, Under Armour will provide on-field and training gear for 16 Aggie varsity sports. Additionally, Under Armour will outfit members of the athletic department including coaches and staff.

"This long-term agreement aligns NM State with the most innovative global performance brand in sports today," said NM State Director of Athletics Mario Moccia. NM State Considering Football Conference Options Following Sun Belt Decision

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - New Mexico State University has received word that the Sun Belt Conference presidents and chancellors have decided to remain a 10-football team conference, beginning with the 2018 season. The NM State Aggie football team will play football in the Sun Belt conference for the next two seasons but will need to consider options for the 2018 season and beyond.

“We’re disappointed with this outcome, but we respect the decision of the Sun Belt Conference,” said NMSU President Garrey Carruthers. “We appreciate being able to play football in the Sun Belt Conference for the past two years and look forward to continuing in the league for the next two years.”

NMSU remains a member of the Western Athletic Conference for its sports other than football. The university is currently evaluating all potential options in regard to football conference affiliation.  Continue Reading This Post >>

2016 New Mexico State Athletics Hall Of Fame Inductees Announced

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The New Mexico State Athletics Department, in conjunction with US Bank, is proud to announce the three distinguished former student-athletes selected as this year’s inductees into the US Bank/NM State Athletics Hall of Fame.

The class of 2016 includes baseball All-American Billy Becher, and volleyball All-Americans Stevi Adams Maytubby and Kim Oguh Nield.

Tamara Inoue Named Interim Senior Woman Administrator

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - NM State Associate Head Women’s Basketball Coach Tamara Inoue has been appointed interim Senior Woman Administrator (SWA) for the Aggies by NM State Director of Athletics Mario Moccia.

Inoue will continue to coach the defending Western Athletic Conference champion Aggies while serving in the administrative role.

Among the duties Inoue will assume as the interim SWA are review and support of NM State’s gender equity and Title IX initiatives and membership, advocating issues important to student-athletes – female and male, and reviewing the Equity in Athletics Disclosure Act Report as well as the Gender Equity Plan.  Continue Reading This Post >>

NM State Hires Chet Savage As Deputy Athletic Director

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - NM State Athletics has appointed Chet Savage as the Aggies new Deputy Athletic Director, NM State Director of Athletics Mario Moccia announced on Friday.

Savage will primarily direct annual fundraising for the Aggies through the Aggie Athletic Club among other duties closely tied with donor related functions.

Savage comes to NM State from Southern Illinois University where he served for the last eight years and as Deputy Athletic Director since 2010.

“I am pleased to welcome Chet to our Aggie Family,” said Moccia. “I have worked closely with Chet for many years and he is an outstanding professional.
