US Bank/NM State Athletics Hall Of Fame Announces 2014 Inductees

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The New Mexico State Athletics Department, in conjunction with US Bank, is proud to announce this year’s inductees into the US Bank/NM State Athletics Hall of Fame.

The class of 2014 will include former women’s basketball star Melanie Maynes-Alfaro, former men’s golfer and men’s golf head coach Scott Lieberwirth and the ‘Voice of the Aggies’ Jack Nixon. NMSU To ‘Unretire’ Football Number 27, Formerly Worn By College Football Hall Of Fame Running Back Pervis Atkins

New Mexico State University will officially “unretire” football number 27, formerly worn by Aggie great Pervis Atkins, during a Nov. 9 ceremony at Aggie Memorial Stadium during the game against Boston College. A jersey bearing the number will then be presented to NMSU President Garrey Carruthers, the university’s 27th president.

“I’m honored to wear the number of one of the best football players NMSU has ever seen,” Carruthers said. “I watched him play football here when I was a student, and he was a fantastic running back.”  Continue Reading This Post >>

NM State Athletics Records New High In Latest Graduation Success Rate

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The NCAA national office announced Thursday, Oct. 24, the Graduation Success Rate (GSR) and Federal Graduation Rate data for the 2003-06 cohort for all Division I institutions as part of the annual NCAA Division I Academic Performance Program. New Mexico State, who’s GSR was 70 percent a year ago, now has a GSR of 73 percent in this year’s report, the highest graduation success rate NM State has ever accomplished to date.

"I am very pleased with the Graduate Success Rate (GSR) scores, with the combination of the APR scores reflect well on the academic performance,” Athletics Director McKinley Boston said. “The basketball APR score of 942 reflects the progress that has been made in that sport.”  Continue Reading This Post >>

David McCollum Named Deputy Athletics Director

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - New Mexico State University President Garrey Carruthers announced today the reorganization of the NMSU Athletics Department. Included in the reorganization is naming Las Cruces businessman David McCollum to the newly created position of deputy athletics director. In the new position, McCollum will oversee all business affairs for the Athletics Department.

“We are going to manage the NMSU Athletics Department more like a business enterprise,” Carruthers said. “That’s why I’ve chosen to bring in a talented businessman like David McCollum, who is not only familiar with NMSU Athletics, but also has a history of managing and growing companies. Amber Olive Earns Stan Bates Award

DENVER, CO - New Mexico State senior softball player Amber Olive was selected as the female 2012-13 Stan Bates Award winner by the Western Athletic Conference, announced Monday. The award honors the top male and female scholar-athlete in the WAC. The award is named in honor of former Commissioner Stan Bates and recognizes athletic, academic and community service accomplishments. The award includes a $3,000 postgraduate scholarship.

Olive, a Simi Valley, Calif., native earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology and communications in May and has been a four-time Academic All-WAC selection for her work in the classroom. She was named to the 2013 CoSIDA Academic All-America and All-District teams and earned the NM State Psychology Department Heads Award for Academic Excellence while maintaining a 3.901 grade point average. Olive was a National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Scholar Athlete in 2010 and 2011.  Continue Reading This Post >>

NM State Student-Athletes Celebrate Success In The Classroom

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The New Mexico State athletics department proudly announced Wednesday that the Aggies were among the leaders in the Western Athletic Conference last year with 190 Academic All-WAC team members, finishing second overall for the 2012-13 academic school year. NM State’s 190 honorees surpassed the number of 2011-12 honorees.

This total encompasses freshmen, transfers and returning student-athletes at NM State for the 2012-13 season. All-WAC recipients must carry at least a 3.0 grade point average and participate in at least 50 percent of the team's contests to qualify for recognition.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Thirty-Seven Aggies Earn WAC All-Academic Honors For Winter Sports

DENVER, CO - The 2012-13 Academic All-WAC men's and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s indoor track and field, women’s swimming and diving and gymnastics teams have been announced. A total of 346 winter student-athletes were named to the list including 37 New Mexico State student athletes representing four sports (men's and women's basketball, women's indoor track and field and swimming and diving). The women's indoor track and field team led the way with 19 members earning academic honors.

Maria Roth Named Senior Associate AD At Memphis

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – New Mexico State Athletics Director Dr. McKinley Boston announced Thursday afternoon that Associate Athletic Director/Senior Woman Administrator Maria Roth has accepted the position of Senior Associate Athletic Director for Sports Services and the Senior Woman Administrator at the University of Memphis, joining the Tigers’ staff on May 1st.

“We are happy and excited for Maria (Roth) as she gets a chance to grow professionally in college athletics,” Boston said. “I know her long term goal is to be an athletic director, and I think this position takes her one step closer to achieving that goal. She has been an outstanding administrator at NM State and has been very effective in her role as senior woman administrator. NM State Lands 58 Student-Athletes On Fall Academic All-WAC List

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The New Mexico State athletics department announced Tuesday that the 58 student-athletes from football, cross county, soccer and volleyball make up the highest number of Academic All-WAC honorees of any other school in the conference for the second straight year.

The NM State football team landed 18 student-athletes on the list, followed by the soccer team with 15, women’s cross country with 12, men’s cross country with nine and the volleyball team with four.

At the end of the fall 2012 semester, 259 student-athletes, 63 percent of the total student-athlete population, achieved a semester GPA of 3.00 or higher while 260 student-athletes, 64 percent of the total student-athlete population, maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher. Among the scholar student-athletes, 55 posted a perfect 4.00 GPA for the semester while 22 maintained a perfect 4.00 cumulative GPA.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggie Strength Coach Receives National Recognition

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) announced Friday that Tony McClure, assistant performance training professional at New Mexico State University, was the recipient of the 2012 NSCA Assistant College Strength and Conditioning Professional of the Year Award.

McClure, who is in his 13th year as part of the Aggie training staff, specializes in speed and agility training and currently works with eight teams at the university including: volleyball, softball, men's and women's tennis, men's and women's golf, equestrian and women's swimming and diving.
