bleedCrimson.net Monthly McKinley Boston Interview :: 07/21/08

bleedCrimson.net will be conducting a monthy Q&A with NMSU Athletics Director McKinley Boston. In this month's interview Associate AD Steve Macy fills in for a traveling Dr. Boston. Steve discusses NMSU's focus on diversity, the recent disbursement from the WAC as well as a couple of football game day traditions.

bleedCrimson.net:Last month the NCAA Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee (MOIC) finalized a proposal that would hold the NCAA's membership accountable for following institutional hiring procedures. The proposal still needs to be sponsored by appropriate bodies in each division. And recently the NMSU athletics department was recognized by the NCAA for their diversity strategy in Racial Diversity. Can you talk a little bit about that award and what has made NMSU so successful in promoting diversity?
Steve Macy: Diversity is one of the staples and principles that we operate under through the athletic department. It's part of our overall strategic plan and quite frankly part of our mission statement to provide a work environment that is diverse and fair in every way shape and form. It's a great area of emphasis for Dr. Boston and for the rest of us on staff. We're proud of the award and hope we continue to receive awards because it's a good barometer of what we're doing as a department and how we're following through on that strategic plan.  Continue Reading This Post >>

bleedCrimson.net Monthly McKinley Boston Interview :: June 2008

bleedCrimson.net will be conducting a monthy Q&A with NMSU Athletics Director McKinley Boston. In this month's interview Dr. Boston discusses the relationship he has with outgoing President Michael Martin, his evaluation of the NMSU program, the impact of rising travel costs on the athletic budget and the importance of booster clubs.

bleedCrimson.net: You talked this week with the Las Cruces Sun-News and made a statement that you were still committed to NMSU with the departure of President Martin. Can you talk about the relationship between an Athletics Director and a school President and why it's important to have a relationship like the one you had with Dr. Martin?
McKinley Boston: As you know this is a very challenging business to manage in that a lot of cases the complexity is driven by managing emotions in lots of ways. You're managing in a glass house and lots of people feel like they have the same capacity as you do to manage and they feel they have the emotional right to like what you do or not like what you do and in some cases they think they can do it better anyway. So it's a job that's certainly very much in the public light and that in itself makes it challenging. What happens is because of the glass house view of managing it, in many cases you have to have a relationship with regents and your president in which there is alignment, in which there is synergy in the vision and support for the vision and in most case a plan to build a program or to sustain a program. And when you don't because there's so much emotion, there's lots of challenges. There's economic challenges, donor challenges and obviously with the advent of technology today in which it's really easy for people to be involved it's quite difficult when there's a disconnect between what you're trying to accomplish.  Continue Reading This Post >>

bleedCrimson.net will be conducting a monthy Q&A with NMSU Athletics Director McKinley Boston. In this month's interview Dr. Boston discusses the men's golf team winning it's second WAC championship, improvements to the athletics facilities and the women's soccer team.

bleedCrimson.net: What are your thoughts on the men's golf team bringing home another WAC title.
Dr. McKinley Boston: To put it mildly, we were a little surprised but very very happy winning two out of the last three years, it's quite an accomplishment and do it with basically a young group. Scott has done a great job and for Tim [Madigan] to win Freshman of the Year and Scott to win Coach of the Year, it's just another strong statement of really where our program is and to be a Top 100 program, to have the women finish third and could have very easily have won. Our spring sports have had a pretty good spring season. It's exciting.  Continue Reading This Post >>
