Forty Nine Aggies Earn 2011 Fall Academic All-WAC Honors

DENVER, CO - Forty-nine student-athletes represented New Mexico State University when the Western Athletic Conference released the 2011 fall sports Academic All-WAC Team, Tuesday, Jan. 17.

The five sports represented were Men's and Women's Cross Country, Football, Soccer and Volleyball. Men’s and Women’s Cross Country received the most honors with 11 each, Football and Soccer tallied 10 apiece and Volleyball had seven student-athletes honored.

This list included the likes of All-American honorable mention Jennah DeVries, all-WAC selection Courtney Schultz and Academic All-American David Niumatalolo.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must have completed at least one academic year, have at least a 3.00 cumulative grade point average and have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's contests. The following is a list of the fall sport honorees:  Continue Reading This Post >>

Aggie Soccer Earns NSCAA Team Academic Award

The New Mexico State soccer team earned recognition from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) for posting a 3.26 GPA under first-year head coach Blair Quinn. The Aggies were one of five WAC teams to be honored. The Aggies finished the 2011 season with a winning record of 10-8-3 and also recorded their first even WAC Tournament victory defeating Hawai'i 2-1 in the first round. This is the third consecutive year the Aggies have earned recognition from the NSCAA for their academic work as they also won team awards in 2009 and 2010.

Elise Nordin Earns CoSIDA Academic All-District Honors

Elise NordinThe 2011 Capital One Academic All-District ® Women’s Soccer Teams, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America, have been released to recognize the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.

New Mexico State junior defender Elise Nordin (Huntington Beach, Calif.) earned Second Team Academic All-District honors for District VII. Nordin is a Nursing major with a GPA of 3.91. Nordin played in 20 of the Aggies' 21 matches this season and played 1621 minutes of action while helping to anchor a New Mexico State defense that allowed just 1.14 goals per game and recorded seven shutouts.

This is Nordin's first national award while she was also earn Academic All-WAC honors as a sophomore in 2010.

The New Mexico State team finished the 2011 season with a 10-8-3 record setting school records for consecutive victories (6), total victories (10) and also earning their first conference tournament victory.

Daisy Hernandez and Yolanda McMillion Named To WAC All-Tournament Team

FRESNO, CA - New Mexico State junior forward Yolanda McMillion and sophomore midfielder Daisy Hernandez earned WAC Soccer All-Tournament Team honors, the conference office announced. This is the first time the Aggies have had players earn conference all-tournament team honors.

The duo guided the Aggies their first postseason win in program history with a 2-1 victory over Hawai'i in the first round of the WAC Tournament. Hernandez directed the field players with a team-high 166 minutes in the two tournament games. McMillion posted the assist on the game-winning goal against the Rainbow Wahine. Yolanda McMillion Earns Second Team All-WAC Honors

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - New Mexico State junior forward Yolanda McMillion earned second team All-WAC soccer honors, the conference office announced at the postseason banquet in Fresno, Calif. This is McMillion's first career postseason award, which is voted on by the eight league coaches, and the fourth in school history.

McMillion led the Aggies in points (14), assists (4), shots (47) and shots on goal (24). She is also tied for the team high in goals (5) in 2011. McMillion ranks in the top 10 in the WAC in many statistical categories. She is the Aggies' all-time leader in career goals (15), career points (35), game-winning goals (7) and shots (86).

The Aggies meet Hawai'i, Thursday, Nov. 3 at 3:30 p.m. in Fresno, Calif., in the first round of the WAC Tournament. The Aggies qualified for the tournament as the No. 6 seed and Hawai'i is the No. 3 seed.  Continue Reading This Post >>

Megan Hendler Named WAC Defensive Player Of The Week

DENVER, CO – Utah State’s Shantel Flanary and New Mexico State’s Megan Hendler have been named Verizon Western Athletic Conference Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, for the week of September 5-11.

Flanary, a senior forward from Highland, Utah (Lone Peak HS), scored a hat trick in only 38 minutes of action against Idaho State. The hat trick was the first of her career. She scored two goals in the first half and added a penalty kick in the second half. Utah State is now one win away from matching last season's win total. Flanary helped the Utah State soccer team improve to 8-0-0 with a pair of home wins last week. She had one shot in the Aggies' 1-0 win against regionally-ranked Rice. Quinn Adds Jill Shoquist To Soccer Staff

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - New Mexico State soccer coach Blair Quinn has hired Jill Shoquist as a graduate assistant for the Aggies. She joined the team after a four-year playing career at Arizona State.

"She played literally every position on the field and understands the system that we will be implementing," Quinn said. "She will be a big help to us."

Shoquist was a midfielder/forward at ASU from 2007-10. She helped the Sun Devils to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances in 2009 and 2010 for only the second time in school history.

Shoquist finished her ASU career with two goals and six assists in 55 career matches and 35 contests started. As a junior, she scored the game-winning goal in the 1-0 win over Pepperdine. In her sophomore season, Shoquist led the Sun Devils in assists with five and started in all 20 matches. Aggie Soccer Picked To Finish 8th In Preseason Coaches Poll

The New Mexico State Aggie soccer team under the direction of first year head coach Blair Quinn was picked to finish 8th by the league's coaches in the preseason media poll. The Aggies are coming off a 2010 season which saw them finish 7-8-3 overall and 1-6-1 in WAC play. Quinn replaces Michael Needham who departed after the 2010 campaign to take over at his alma mater, Rhode Island. The Aggies return leading goal scorer Yolanda McMillion who tallied seven goals last season, however, the Aggies lose their second leading goal scorer and leader in assists, Crystal Burns (six goals, eight assists) who transferred to Quinnipiac in the offseason.

The Aggies open up the 2011 season on Friday, August 19th in El Paso as they take on I-10 rival UTEP. The Aggies open their home schedule one week later on Friday, August 26th as they take on Prairie View A&M.  Continue Reading This Post >>
